So today I finished a course to teach me to do more with oxy-acetalene than simply bend and heat metal. I learned a ton and learned my TIG skills were very relevant. There is something primitive about a gas torch that appeals to the male psychy I think. Anyway here is my first piece of impromptu art that I worked on the fly in class without a plan really. I am calling it a diamond in the rough from its vertical shape and its intentional grittyness. Constructive Comments appreciated.First the overview. Gritty and raw but kind of cool.Detail Showing corner weld done flat with metal fitted up in a V frame. The whole V frame was then cut not right down the middle but offset and then the two Vs I welded together using a vertical uphill technique. After that I used a 00 cutting tip to carve in the R for my name. And then just for giggles I braised on the brass. I suppose I could have cut with higher gas and gotten a bit cleaner cut but I liked the molten metal look. What i cant figure out how to do is do a fillet weld with a gas torch. I keep loosing the puddle or blowing through the vertical piece. Anyone know a video on the internet that shows the process? If not can one of you intrepid guys post one to youtube? Anyway I am pretty happy with my torch only first project. Obviously more practice will make it better.Miller Syncrowave 200 Runner (Home)Victor Journeyman Torch Rig (Home)Jet Horizontal and Vertical BandsawMiller Spectrum 375 (Next on the List)
Reply:This is where all the practice comes into play. Metal thickness will determine tip and flame size. Then the angle of the flame in relation to the metal, for me, will vary from 45* down to 10* depending on metal thickness. The thinner the metal the lower the angle is how I've always done it. I always push the puddle. Don't know if this according to code but it's the way I was taught and it's always worked for me.                           JMHO,                                      MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
