Greetings, based on your experience, what do you think is an optimal height for a welding and cutting table that will reduce fatigue, provide the best work positions and be comfortable to weld or cut at? Reply:Go to youre kitchen and see if that cabinet hight is good for you .thats what i did .
Reply:Not to be a smart a$$, but your height will play a big part in this. I have one customer thats 6'7 and his wife is 6'2. All the kitchen and bath cabinets in their house are sitting 3" taller that the regular height. I had to lay 2  X's down under each one to jack them up so that they'd be at a comfortable height for him. He hates my house because all my doors are 6'6 high.Given a choice I prefer to sit on a small stool when doing small tig projects. That height sort of set how high the table needed to be. To me 34" is a good height, about the same height as most kitchen tops, but I'd want it lower if the table was wider so I can lean out farther onto the table. My saw horses are set up so that the top is at about 28" for that reason because I usually mig on larger items and need to lean out over the 30-48" wide top to work in the middle. We set the tops in my buddies shop at the same height as his table saw. That way he can use them as in feed and out feed tables. You sort of need to look at a lot of things and see what works for you..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Ah yes, has already been stated...and the great part of building something as opposed to buying it...you get to make it however YOU want.I just built my welding table, after welding on the driveway on hands and knees for quite some time. One thing for sure...driveway is to low.I'm 6'1" and have a bad lower back.  Soooo, it works better for me to be able to stand as upright as possible.  That being said, my table is probably higher than is comfortable for others but point is it works for ME.Figure out what works for you, kitchen counter idea is a great one for a point of reference, and go from there.Have fun.
Reply:Stand up straight, shoulders back, arms straight down at your sides, fingers curled into a fist.  Have someone else measure from your knuckles to the floor.  Build your table so that top is that high from the ground...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:here's the big factor. What are you making?  When I worked at a company doing small assemblies, I sat at a chair 85% of the time an the height I would say  would be around standard counter top height. However, when I made large components(8' and up) we had low tables and low wheelie stools. That way you could sit down work on the low part.  Stand up work on the middle. and if need be easily climb on the table and work at the top.    I want to say the table height was around 28-34" it was pretty low.Now adays I work on a metal table and pick a work chair that comfortable fits (and wheels) around it.
Reply:That recipe for work height is one I heard somewhere for how high to set an anvil.  I figure blacksmiths have been doing this type of work for about 5000 years, and might have figured out a thing or two...More practically, I've got a steel work table in my shop that's about 34" tall.  With a vise I find it's a little too high for me to work at standing.  I'm about 6'2" tall.  It's just about right to sit at, but that's only good for relatively small assemblies.  DSW is right on the money in his reply.  Put anthing more than 12" tall on top of a countertop high table, and you'll need a step ladder pretty quick to weld on the top.It really does depend on what kind of work you see yourself doing.... Originally Posted by nctoxDAB, I'm just asking out of ignorance, not trying to argue with you, but why that low?  I'm in the planning stages of a welding table, and don't want to build something that I will be dissatisfied with later.  I'm currently using a table cobbled together from scrap 2x6's, etc. I built it appx 42' high, so that I wouldn't have to bend over much to steady my hand when welding. A stool can be made any height for those longer periods when you need to sit, but it seems to me that higher is better for stand-up working.  Just a newbie's thoughts.  I'm probably overlooking something.  I do frequently.
Reply:I would also consider a setting position also. For say like a bar stool because you might want to serve drinks at some point to relive some of the fatigue
Reply:41 inches high seem to work for me.  and i'm a short and fat guy.  i'm only 5'9", but i only make small projects.  sitting on a low stool brings everything at face level... that might not work for you though.
Reply:if you were gonna do one thing  only you could answer that question. here is a secret i have learned about welding/fabricating/bending stuff/cutting stuff/no such thing as the  "best", etcetcetc...no way...you gotta be flexible because today you are doing something different than tomorrow...i have a cutting/welding table that is perfect for some stuff. other things i do differently..
Reply:haha if you have enough money. I've seen people weld on top of scissor lift or air lift tables. You know come to think of it, it would only take a few pneumatic linear actuators and some welding work to make one...
Reply:Ajustable height would really be nice, don't want all that work build a lower table for the kind of work DSW has described, and he is on the money here, and build a second piece that sits on top to get you around counter height that sits in a groove or pins in. Reply:One thing for sure...driveway is to low.I'am 5'-6'' and the driveway still too low.make your table 36'' tall with bolt on wheels say 6''' wheels . if yo want it higher buy taller wheels or put a lift kit in (spacers)   to make it shorter smaller wheels or an a-dapter kit the you can bolt on .   pipe nipples maybe 4'' 6'' 8'' with bolting flanges Daye
