Hi everyone. I just completed my tubing notcher. There was allot of machining and milling involved but the over all cost was less than $50. There are many good store bought ones out there but for the amount of pipe work I do I couldn't justify the cost of purchasing one so I'm hoping I can get by with this one. I just made the first cut with it and it worked perfectly. The main block has self lubricating bronze bushings so I think it should last for awhile but to be safe I put an oil hole in the top as well for added lubrication. One thing about making your own tools is if they break you can repair them easily. Here's a few pics of the completed task. Hope you all have a great day. Reply:Good looking notcher Paul,Looks like it gives a clean cut. What are you powering it with?.I really have to get myself a mill. Great job.Simonhttp://members.optusnet.com.au/~abba/index.html
Reply:Very cool 4shorts.  X2 on the "I need a mill" comment.
Reply:Thanks guys. The notcher will come in handy I'm sure but your right about a milling machine. It's hard to own a lathe with out having a mill. The mill I have is not an expensive one but for the projects I do It's good enough. The lathe is a 1979 Sofia but works flawlessly and I've owned it for many, many years. Simon the notcher is powered by a hand drill and It makes the cut very fast. Reply:Vey nice work. I have a similar Mill Drill at home with a vise much like the one you have. It really works well. Your notcher does a nice job.
Reply:Have you guys seen one that will do 2.5" pipe all the way up to 5" pipe? My dilema now is that I do everything by hand as I haven't seen a notcher able to do that large of tubing. Think you can build me one? John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:very cool....I plan on building one soon to replace the ol joint jigger i have now...
Reply:Originally Posted by 4shortsJohn I would think if you need one that big using a hand drill to power it up would be tough. I bet one could be made with a 1 HP motor on the end of the shaft. If I could only retire, I would have so much more time to play with this stuff.
Reply:Very cool notcher. I need to make one too, but I don't have a mill. I do have an old Craftsman (Atlas) lathe, but I need to do some PM to it. That design sure is sweet. I'm sure it doesn't move or chatter. Looks very, very stable. Great job!
Reply:Put simple.... Outstanding work!
Reply:4shorts,you are making that dunebuggy project I have been putting off for 15 years a whole lot harder to push to the bottom of the pile of projects.  Great work.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

I was there in 2001 on the week of Sept.11th visiting a good friend of mine that runs a company called PSC Philip services. It's a tanker cleaning business. Lots of newfies out your way but don't know if that's a good thing! Thanks for the compliment on the knotcher. It works well and I'm happy with it. Paul
