I want to add onto the foot of a log splitter, the foot is 1 1/2 inches thick, I think I can weld this if I go with a deep grove and a lot of weld passes. What type of steel can I use, that I can get in this thickness? What do you experts thinkJohn
Reply:a pic would help. the foot is that the wedge or just a plateDaye
Reply:I don't have a way to post a picture, the part that I call the foot is the part that the log stops against so the wedge can do it's thing.Problem is when using the splitter in the vertical position to do large tree trunks is if it is tapered very much, it pushes off and raises the splitter off the ground, hence needing a bigger foot. It's something I've been pondering doing, just trying to find out what I need.John
Reply:1-1/2" is a lot of meat for a splitter push-plate, or foot.Presuming that the existing base is mild steel plate, any grade of low carbon steel would do for an addition.High strength alloys of high or medium carbon plate would not be as weld friendly as plain 'ol low carbon. If you're asking for a steel number, A36 would be a good bet, and should be easy to buy from stock.I'm not so sure this application needs a super deep groove and heavy weld."John R" that's a good handle for a Wolverine.
