Need to find out how much a piece of plate weighs?

I have a piece of plate cut into a cirlce with about a 3' diameter at work that is 1" think.  My boss said I could have it, and I think it could make a small welding table with it.  I need to know how much it weighs before I decide to throw it in the back of my Explorer and try to unload it at home.

Reply:Funny you mention this...someone working on the chiller pipes in a building I used to work in left a huge steel endcap sitting on the ground.  I asked and was told it was extra/junk and that I could have it.  It's was more than 1" thick...close to 2" probably and is about 3 feet across.I must have worked for an hour just trying to lift it up on its edge...AND NEVER DID.  I brought in a crowbar and got it on its edge, but then couldn't even come close to lifting it, even with a helper.  That thing is still sitting there 3 years later.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:Getting into the vehicle is the easy part, I can use our crane at work, its just dropping it off at work thats the tough part.
Reply:Harbor Freight has a nice lift table to handle about 1000 #.  Saves the back!!!!
Reply:a general rule i remember is that a 12"x12"x1" thick plate weighs about 40 lbs its slightly over that but it gets you pretty close for guestimating things like this so your plate is 280/300 lbs or so.
Reply:You can probably rent if you don't already have an engine hoist to lift it once you get it to the house.  I bought a 6 inch thick 24x36 granite surface plate at a local auction which me and another guy managed to get in the back of his Nissan Pathfinder (it just buried the shocks).  We basically pushed it off the stand into the truck.  When I got it home we used an engine hoist and some straps and lifted it out with no problems and since the hoist rolls we were able to position it where I wanted.  You could probably tack weld a few connection points on the plate and lift it with a hoist.  Lowes and Home Depot rent those for about $20 / half day.  Cheap way of saving the back.Michael

Reply:We have a hook welded to it already. This was suppose to be a cap for a billboard we tore down, but they cut the cap too small.
Reply:i broke a come along trying to pull my table up a ramp into my pick up, got it home and had 4 frends move it into the shop. it has not moved sece that day. its a 3' X 5' X 1" great table, you can beat the pooo out of stuff on it and no wories.8^)) well werth the truble to get it home, mine was also a free bee and it even had legs on it already. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:You can calculate the weight of a round plate by multiplying the radius squared times pi. then multiply that answer by .282 the weight of 1 square inch of steel.  So for a 36" diameter circle multiply 18x18=324 x 3.1415 =1017.8 multiply by .282 = 287 lbs.  If the thickness is other than 1" you have to multiply that amount.  Just remember the .282 per sq. inch...Regards, Hog....
