If you could carry only one type, Rod on your Service Truck, what would your personal preference be ?       And why?
Reply:WIA 3.2mm 16TC (4916). work well in all positions, low hydrogen, easy running, nice finish. can be used for pressure work but versatile enough for structural work.not sure if they are available outside australia........
Reply:312-16 - While it is expensive compared to the low carbon or low alloy rods, it can be used to weld most any steel or combinations and it is low hydrogen as are all stainless steel electrodes.

Reply:Hastelloy-W  Can weld just about anything, carbon steels, stainless steels and Nickel alloys, can also do cast iron.We use that as our "mystery" material rod

Reply:Thanks for the input.  By way of explanation of the question,I do Horizontal Directional drilling for a living. I learned welding in the Army over 30 yrs ago,but never really made it my primary job.The Crew I work on now has the only portable welder in the Company, and I seem to be the one having to do most of the Maintainence/Repair Welding for the whole Company lately. Our Truck isn't a Welder's Truck,so we have limited space to carry Rods, welding equipment,so thats why the question. There seems to be lots of new Rods/materials out there now, than back in the day,so I'm probably gonna aggravate y'all to death with questions. Thanks, this is a great site.
Reply:what company do you work for? I weld for Specialty Drilling Tools out of OKC. if you ever need some tooling give us a shout, full service machin, and welding shop.405-670-2225, ask for Preston

Reply:Another vote for 7018, I only keep 2 rods on hand 7018 and 6010/11, and I don't use the 6010 that often.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:I keep one 10# box on the truck with  5/32 & 3/32 6010 and 7018.
Reply:I love that everybody took the main question by the horns. Yet I wonder, why not make a bit of room for the rods that you need to begin with? I have really begun to take a liking to 6010 lately!  But, I won't give up on 7018. Even still, you may need a couple different sizes of each. Unless you always do the same weld, the same weld, the same weld...City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:7018,  is my first choice.  I would never use any stainless on something I might have to work on again as you can NOT cut it with a torch if more repairs (especially in the field)were necessary down the road.I actually carry many types and sizes of rod in the shop and in the truck. It might be months between the times I use the "odd" stuff, but it sure saves the day when it's time comes.Last edited by tessdad; 02-03-2010 at 07:31 AM.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com

Reply:90 per cent of my welding is done with 7018 or 7010, i carry both at all times.
