Can you weld with 3  12 volt and 1 6 volt battery hooked in series?
Reply:3 x 12 + 6 = 42 volts. It all depends on what you’r welding and the rods. Need more info.
Reply:7010/1/8 rod on water pipe at hunting cabin.  Don't want to haul my 500 amp hobart 7 miles back into the woods.Last edited by tankeedog; 02-10-2010 at 10:36 AM.Reason: More info.
Reply:7018   /   1/8 rod  on water pipe 7 mi back in the woods.
Reply:You’ll probably have to try combinations of batteries to adjust the arc.
Reply:Why not use a small arc gouging carbon and some Everduer(Silicon Bronze)?
Reply:What is everduer?  Character Character.Last edited by tankeedog; 02-10-2010 at 12:02 PM.Reason: Message was to short Character.
Reply:Does the voltage adjust the arc,  and which way does DC currant flow , from positive to negative, or visa versa?  Also why doesen't lincoln and Hobart  have  amperage and voltage meters mounted on the welders when they come from the factory?

Reply:How can a message be to short? I will never understand computer tecnoligy or spelling, or the companys  that make welders and safety gear for the men in the trenches.  The welding engineers should have to work in the field for a couple years before they design anything.  And why don't they make REMOTE digital readout and voltage and amperage adjustments right on or near  the man doing the welding in the first place?
Reply:How much do i want to spend?  I went down to the junkyard and with the help of a electrican friend had both voltage and amperage readings on my Hobart with about 3 hrs. work at a cost of 5 dollars cash.  If a jouneyrman electrician from the mill can figuer it out in 3 hrs I'm quite sure these fancey engineers at Hobart or lincoln could come up with something on one of their 32,000 dollar machines without to much extra expense .......DUH!  and anyway the oil companys  never worry how much they charge us for fuel  i'm sure they could afford to pay the extra 5 bucks.Last edited by tankeedog; 02-10-2010 at 12:57 PM.Reason: Not enough characters
Reply:Wow! am i stupid.  Are there no positive electrons ? If conventional current flow is from + to - .  OH i see > there are no positive electrons, thanks for clearing that up for me.
Reply:Two or three 12v batteries in series will run 1/8" 7018. Two will stick rods.Three may be a bit hot.I was told the batteries may produce hydrogen gas, outside is safer.Been there, done that, it works.
Reply:Thanks a lot!  Thats a place to start, guess i'm on the right track.
Reply:You may also want to have some 3/32" on hand. They may run better with whatever random battery setup you wind up with.
Reply:Yea, 3/32 works for me with 2 batteries , 3 batteries 1/8  just a  little hot, anyway the frozen water pipe has succumed to my wresteling of the batteries, no more leak, thanks!
Reply:Glad to hear it worked tankeedog! Now that's a field fix for ya.
