I thought it might be interesting to see how much wire could be run about a 10 hour day (that's what I work).  Last week I run a 30lb. spool in about 8.5 hours.  Everything was already tacked togather when I got here so all I had to do was weld.   My black shirt is now a very light brown on the left side.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:In an automated MIG weld I know of, 1330 welds are made in 10 hours.  7.4 hours are actual arc time, the other 2.6 hours is down time.  Each weld is 8 second arc time at 425 ipm of 0.045" wire.  This works out to about 34 lbs in 7.4 hrs, or 4.6 lbs/hr.You did damn good, at 30 lbs in 8.5 hours, you hit 3.6 lbs/hr.  Stop your slacking and you may beat the machine someday!
Reply:Wow, you were going strong! My duty cycle would have stopped me long before that I did a 2lb spool over a weekend ***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
Reply:At place I used to work that made large industrial water purification and desalinization units, we did a lot of mig work.  Some of the guys liked to brag about how much wire they burned in a night.  They could consistently burn three 30lb spools in a 10hr shift.  I tended to stick with one spool a night...and kept good quality.  It wasn't long until they moved me on to smaller parts that had to look good...and left them to the work where quantity was the goal.
Reply:I've burned 5Lbs in a day's work doing non-production stuff.  That also including some prep and tacking.  At the end of the day, I thought that was a lot of wire to have burned.  I've got a 30Lb spool of L-56 that I've been workin' away for quite a while now.-Heath

Reply:Back before we went to the 600 lb. drums of 1/16" metal-core we used 44lb. spools of .052 hard wire. A typical day included changing your spool, probably 4 out of 5 days. I'll have to check to see how much wire we burn in a year.Always looking for another old VW, especially in the southeast.
Reply:I burned up a small 1lb roll of innershield .35 flux core today working on my truck.
Reply:we often use 44lb metal core spool in a day of 10h...i dont remember the weight (23 lb maybe) of alum. wire a day each day when we weld alum...
Reply:The last big welding job that I did for my last employer, was a 18 ft dump box doing the floor with 1/4" cold roll plate and the sides with 3/16" cold roll both sheered in 9 ft lengths. We welded both in side and out side to the old frame of the dump box, only went though about 2-50 lbs. of wire spools in 2- 12 hr days. I thought we did real well concidering the fillins that we did on gaps.
Reply:About 23yrs ago when I worked at Calkins Mfg in Spokane I burned 44# of .045 solid wire in 7hrs of actual working time. That was just on one particular part that I could haul a$$ on.
Reply:Three 23 lb. spools of Esab Coreshield 8  5/64  during a 12 hour shift. All passed UT.  Yes, I wear a respirator and yes indeed I was tired. Thank god for apprentices. I could barely haul my own rear around, they hauled all my leads, LN25 and other junk.Last edited by bluestreak; 10-22-2006 at 10:29 AM.
Reply:And i thought 5-6 lbs of tig wire in a day is alot.. you guys work too much..  ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I have burned a 16lb spool of alum in a 12 hour dayNothing is impossible if you have the determination and intestinal fortitude Semper Fi,
Reply:Last year I welded the main frames for the John Deere 512 disk ripper. It was a 2 man job at 60hrs/week and we would each run through a 500 lb box of .045" in 6 or 7 days.
