Funny story, about 3 years ago my brother bought a sentry rifle fireproof safe at homedepot. he loads into his truck yanks the bag off the door handle and throws it into the safe "so it doesn't fly away on the freeway" and naturally locks the combination and the key inside his brand new safe!!!! He doesn't realize it until later that day when he took it off his truck  and tried to open it. DUH!!!!!!well it just sat there waiting for the day he would go back to home depot or something.......naturally he loses the recipt! So now not even sentry will send him the code unless he goes thru this lengthy process......so the safe sat in the corner of the garage for 3 years!!!until I bought my plasma cutter and my tig.....I was telling him what I could do with it and we both look at each other and had the same tought at the same time!!!!!Let cut the safe open!!!!!he is the rest of the story in pictures.....good times..... ignore the wavey cuts.....freehand......next time I will use a metal ruler or sumthing...... Reply:Ha!  Did the same thing myself a few years ago.  The local Lowe's was having a parking lot sale and they had a small safe locked shut.  Offered them $5 and they took it.  Went home and cut a square out of the back with an abrasive blade.  A little welding and I have a new safe.  Oh, just for those that do not know, most safes (at least the ones I have run across) all use a standard so many turns left, then so many right, etc.  With the back off the lock you can see the "tumblers" and by turning the dial and lining up the notches figure out the combination.  I have done three safes this way including the one from Lowe's.  The other two were very nice (read $$$$$$$) fire safes that were given to me for hauling off.  They were locked with the door OPEN.  I knew I could figure the combination out so I helped them out and took the heavy junk off their hands.Old farm boy type welder/fabricator
Reply:Pedro, thats great!  Now I know what I'll have to do if I forget my combo.Last Xmas, I bought the same safe for my wife, for a jewelry box!  I made shelves and covered them in a faux suede material.  I bought the ring trays like jewelry stores use.  I mounted it to the concrete floor and the wall in an unused closet and put in vertical 3 halogen lamp track lighting so she can see it there. She has WAY too much stuff for a "normal" box and when we went on vacation, we would always worry about being burglerized.  This won't stop it, but may slow them down a bit.  I weighs over 200lbs.and is about 5' tall.  Most won't be prepared to break is loose from the mounts, nevertheless carry it off alone Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:Very cool. Yes, always wear your safety glasses or shield. You only have one set of eyes and I've seen way too many metal workers with bad eyes. I always wear mine, even when not working on stuff, it's too easy to forget you don't have them on, then you start working on something and fling...right in your eye.!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
