How To do it??

Hi all...I saw a guy do this once and now would like to do it myself..there were some steel posts in a parking lot where I worked the welder who worked there came with his torch and cut the tops of the post to kind of look like a crown ..he heated up the points of the crown and bent them over welding up the seams and then ground down the welds to a perfect ball top...It this an eyeball kind of thing or are there measurements to take??? Reply:i'm sure if you have been doing it a while, its just eyeball... but just remember the longer your points, the taller the point will be. if your points are too short, when you bend them over, you will have a boxed top, or they wont meet if they are really too short. it sounds kind of fun, i might have to try it if i have the time and material someday.

Reply:Come you blokes,its not that hard to do.Its half a sphere.The orange peel describes it perfectly.Think of your  half orange quartered and halved again.All thats needed is the pipe OD. Come up a quarter of the circumference, off the horizontal datum. Divide the circumference by say 8 to avoid "flats" in pipe.The rest is by eyeball but not that hard.  The trick is in the right amount of curve between the top point and the base line.No worries mate!GrahameLast edited by Grahame; 11-17-2006 at 06:24 AM.
Reply:i would have to agree with the T.L.A.R. system. unless you are doing several verry close togather than maybee a pattern is called for.a little extra bead and a little more or less grinding to keep the shape and size you want if needed. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
