Are stainless steel nuts weldable? If so, could I use the same strength equation I would use for steel? .928*weld size*length? Thanks!!
Reply:Most SS nuts are weldable. They are usually weaker than Grade 5 or Grade 8 nuts however. I can easily peel the threads right out of a SS nut tightened on a Grade 5 bolt..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I don't think such a simple formula should be applied to welding something as small as a nut. I would be very careful to err on the side of overkill if I were going to rely on a welded nut to hold anything over my head. That being said.Yes most stainless nuts are weldable. Most stainless nuts found at a hardware store will be alloy 18-8 or SAE 301. Which should be similar in strength to mild steel or slightly stronger.
Reply:Whether or not a metal is weldable, be it plate or angle or bolts or nuts or whathaveyou, depends on the alloy of the metal. Some alloys/metals are weldable, and some are not. Some are easily weldable, some are weldable with varying degrees of difficulty, and some are not weldable at all.Stainless nuts could be 18-8/304 or 316 or some other alloy. They are usually weldable with the proper procedures and fillers, but again that all depends on WHAT alloy the metal is. If the nuts are made from a free-machining stainless alloy like 303, then they are NOT weldable.Last edited by MoonRise; 03-04-2010 at 05:06 PM. The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Be sure to use some type of a thread lubricant on stainless fasteners. Never seize, oil, thread sealant, loctite.....something. If you don't the threads will gall and you'll never get them apart......Mike

Reply:stainless steel is weldable if its made into a nut tube or pipe does not matter
Reply:lol.. boy you guys can overthink anything..lol.. it's a stainless nut.. i haven't met one that couldn't be welded.. a simple yes would've done..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room.. |
