Howdy all, yesterday my instructor laid down a perfect 3g bead on 3/8ths inch angle using 7018 and a crescent weaving pattern at 100amps. I tried the same thing all day for 2-3 hours playing with the machine, turning it down to 95, trying to spread out my bead to 1/2 - 3/4 inch... Needless to say I couldn't keep the pool from running down and looking like ***...Short of it:work angle was -5 to -15*100-95 amps1/2-3/4 wide crescent and zigzag.and a faster travel speed and I still ended up with the pool running down... instructor said just keep at it...I'm at a loss here... unfortunately my projects covered in uneven globs of metal so covering that is getting a little rough as I continue to attempt more passes... Any suggestions for the new guy?? I tried every counter in the text book, still couldn't get it...
Reply:maybe try keeping your arc shorter, press the rod into the work more. also try a very slight pause at the top of your weave but no pause at the bottom. don't make your weave too big or your pool might slump,i never weave more than one rod thickness in a single run.good luck, nothing perfects like practice
Reply:Wanted to correct that it wasnt 3g. 3F is what I meant, thanks stamp. I think you might be on to something, my arc length might have been a little long.... I'll try to turn it down farthr amps wise and go a little slower w/ a thinner bead. 1/2'' is pretty dang huge.
Reply:oops, i better correct my reply too. 3 is vertical, i was thinking of horizontal.... my bad.for a vert up fillet i do a triangular weave for the root run with a distinct pause at each toe and in the centre. keep plenty of upwards angle on the stick.try to build a shelf each time you step up and lay each run on top of the previous shelf. keep your arc short though and only go a rod thickness each side of the root. if you do a capping run on top you can weave out much further.don't turn your amps down too much, try to work on technique. if i was using a 3.2mm 7018 on that size plate i would run at about 110-115 amps.Last edited by stamp; 03-05-2010 at 10:52 PM.
