just wondering if there are any members belonging to the pipefitters union in USA or Canada I am in the process of getting the right tickets to join up and wondering what your thoughts are about the union etc i toured the one here in Vancouver BC Canada and thought wow the training facility they have was very impressive!
Reply:Union member for 15 years. IAM local 771. We have pipe fitters, welders, millwrights and operating engineers in our local. We all work at the local pulp/paper mill. I couldn't imagine working for the company we work for without being union.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Alumguy...unless you 're already a determined pipefitter, you might want to check out the B.C.  boilermakers.  Click around the photo album.  Some good work shots.http://www.boilermakers359.org/pages...mberphotos.htm
Reply:Is UA the only union out there for weldors?

Reply:the UA has a hybrid welding program which is a great opportunity if you can swing it.  i'm not sure if it's available in canada or not.  basically it's six weeks 8hrs/day welding instruction. start w/plate and go to pipe. you must pass certs along the way. depending how may pipe certs you get at the end you come out a 2nd or3rd year apprentice.  a buddy of mine had his two boys go through program. both made it through. i don't believe you can get better training, in service or construction, than the UA. just my opinion.btw, i'm 597 chicago.
Reply:Pumahvac: Would you happen to know which local I'd talk to in NJ about that? The only UA Affiliated Local I can find is Plumbers Local 14 out of Lodi NJ.The world is amazing when you are slightly strange.
Reply:sorry no. that's probably a good place to start. give them a call and see if you are in their jurisdiction. this might be a tuff time to get in. i know we have suspended hiring because of the economy.

Reply:I have looked into the boilermakers local 359 but I don't want to do school for the boilermakers course i just finished all my welding tickets i am a welder all I want to do is weld. but I spoke to a gentleman there who didn't want to take just welders unless we wanted to do the course the pipefitters union i visited treated us great and spent over three hours talking with us not to mention we were invited over to meet and explore the facilities they treat you like you belong. The Boilermakers 359 couldn't  have cared less if we wanted to join or not didn't get a very welcome feeling from him!
Reply:WHughes i have a friend who was gonna apply for the Plumbers and Pipefitters in Spokane, Wa and he said you have to have calculus to join. Any info on this. BTW i am Considering Plumbers and Pipefitters for a career choice. In 2nd year of school now and been doin pipe all year and love it.TJ
Reply:woo hoo!.. pipe!.. stay away from plumbin' man..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:Calculus, no. Trigonometry yes, and its easy. Trig is all about following formulas. You guys that only want to weld be prepared to learn how to fit as well. You will go further in the trade if you can also fit. If you can plumb or run copper even better. Be prepared to work 50/50 with your fitter and not be one of those guys who doesnt know whats going on if for some reason your fitter is sick or not around.Boilermakers are a good group, but you will find more work as a pipefitter. Boilermakers are responsible for the vessels to the first flange so you wont see many of them on jobs. Pipefitters take the piping system from that flange to the rest of the job.Spokane is mostly a plumbing hall. If he is not tied to the area, I would recommend 598 in Pasco (where I am), 26 in Western Washington or 290 in Portland Oregon. All 3 have better training facilities than Spokane.UA Local 598
Reply:dang.. is it all union out there?.. can you go anywhere and get a job?.. or does it have to be union friendly?..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:Here you go Ibanez....A link to some information. as you can see, in construction, Union members account for 6.7 percent of workers, but we account for 13 percent of wages. In other words, its not all Union out there, but on average, the Union member makes nearly double the money. http://aflcio.org/joinaunion/why/uni...niondiff10.cfmUA Local 598
Reply:meh.. i hear ya'.. i live in s.c. where it don't take that much to live.. i guess that's why there's no unions down here....lol..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
Reply:Thanks WHughes. I have no problem traveling. I actually wouldnt mind it. Im young i think it would be good for me. Thanks for the info.TJ
Reply:Plumber L.U.130 Chicago.   I know you asked for fitters but.... Where are you gonna take a dump.... That's where I come in.

Reply:Boston Pipefitters LU537.
Reply:We are responsible fore more than just vessels We do all the breaching on the boilers, all the tube welding inside the boilers, filter houses on the boilers, structural steel in our jurisdiction, and many more jobs.we are on alot of jobs that the fitters dont work at.Yes fitters have more work but their out of work list is alot bigger than ours.Going threw a apprenticeship wether it be for the fitters or the boilermakers or whatever the trade you will learn alot more than taking the fast road in .you say you are allready a welder but do you know how to safely rig in a 10000 lb valve into a building or how to signal a crane, read blue prints Exct... all these come in to play to be the best you can be at the job you have chosen. After the arc has died the weld remains
Reply:my brain said 16 wks, my hands typed 6. sorry.
Reply:Local 467 san mateo CA, wouldnt do it any other way, 3rd generation plumber/pipefitter. My union is mainly a plumbers local with some fitting work, very few true fitters. Going to school on my own time to get my aws welding certs although at my hall all of the tests are a visual inspection unlike the aws which is a destructive bend test. And if you get into a combined local and learn both trades tell people you are a fitter no one knows what it is, so they wont as you to come over and fix stuff.
Reply:wow all this information is very ensightful and i thank everyone for their response!  got a tig test to do and I will be sending in my paperwork asap!
