Magnets and Welding

I have a bunch of the right angle magnets just kinda stuck to my welding table.  Is it possible that they could affect weld quality.  I keep them on the lower tier of the table.  Just wonderingLincoln 255XT Power Mig                                                                    Lincoln Precision Tig 225Hypertherm Powermax 30
Reply:The magnets will screw with the arc and make it wander all over. Just use them to do your tacking then put them some where else when welding.
Reply:BTW, don’t store magnets long term without a keeper or they will weaken.
Reply:Magnetic fields can cause arc blow, you'll know if they're having an effect on your welds. The strength of a magnet decreases exponentialy with the distance. If you have them on the lower tier of your table they should't have any effect.
Reply:Those little magnets don't have a strong enough magnetic field to be noticeable.   Storing them on the table will not have any ill effects on your welding.

Reply:Transit,I've seen magnetic keepers for the "U" shaped magnets.  However, I've not seen one for the 45 x 90 degree magnets.  Is there such a thing?  Where can I find them?Thanks!
Reply:Stick-ManWikipedia:  A magnet keeper is ferromagnetic bar placed across the poles of a permanent magnet that helps preserve the strength of the magnet by completing the magnetic circuit, and are particularly useful for magnets which have a low magnetic coercivity, such as AlNiCo magnets. Reply:No need for keepers on newer magnets unless specifically stated. They were for ainico magnets. Magnetic field strength drops by the square of the distance. If magnets are even a foot away, I doubt they'd have any tangible effects on your weld what so ever. You have nothing to worry about in either aspect

Reply:I wondered about this myself,I have 3 of the larger ones and  2 of the small ones,I just leave them stuck to my welder cart,good or bad about doing this. Reply:couple of plys of aluminum foil under your welding helmet will keep the magnetism at bay, and keep your arc nice and clean.er, just kidding

Reply:I keep my magnets on a back corner of the table. No problems.If magnets caused a problem at all, why would everyone be using them? When in use, they are directly on the work piece(s)."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes;But, a stupid person.............never learns.
Reply:Studies show that welders who work around a lot of magnets are more attractive.
