Still pondering all the piece parts and how to on a smaller equipement trailer, 4,000 lb or so. I've got some freeby 4"x1&1/2" channel (3/16ths, 5.4lb). Still collecting as time goes.  For my own asthetics I'm wanting the webs inward and the flat flange out. I am considering using 2"x2" by 1/4" angle for the cross members so I could place them low enough for the 1&1/2" decking flush with the channel. Any way here's some mock-ups of what the joint would look like. Much like a cut-away-end view. Piece of scrap channel with a piece of angle placed like I was thinking of doing. Not welded, just tacked. What bothers me is the gap at the bottom between the angle and the channel web. That's gotta be 3/16ths easy. No sweat here. If the idea is pure crap, holler. Attached Images
Reply:I don't see a problem there at all Sandy. That type of connection is used all the time. If the angle was going against flat plate there wouldn't be a question about it, right? Any weld you get on the bottom of the angle to the channel leg is to be considered a bonus! I see this on pro built , custom trailers all the time. No sweat bro, weld on and be happy!!

Reply:No problem bud, just my .02, ya know. YMMV and all that. Happy building!!
Reply:if you wanted to you could cut the angle to suit the channel so you get no gap a little more time for a nicer finish you don't need to weld it just have it matching the angle as welding may create a stress point for cracking you know the old rule never weld across a chassis if you don't have too sometimes theres no other way but its best avoided if possible Last edited by wello; 12-27-2006 at 01:51 AM.Creative metal Creative metal Facebook
