ok the task at hand was to fab up a door that was solid but would vent the hot arizona air. My design was to build a frame out of 16 ga. 1.5" square tubing with a cross bar a foot from the top and a center down bar from the bottom of the cross bar down to the bottom. I wthen plated the bottom with a 24ga. sheet metal and the top 1 foot section would be backed with Perforated sheet metal and a double lock box with dead bolt and door knob. The task at hand with this gate was to build a gate that was simillar to the other 40000000 gates in his yard but be a little different, also he wanted this gate to be stout and heavy. I took a parial design from another gate he had hanging on his side yard and made a full gate out of this design peice. it is a 16 ga. 1.5" square frame, .5" square center grid, the posts are made from 16 ga. 3"x3" with a custom top stop latch (not pictured).
Reply:show a pic of the latch if you could I am working on a gate myself
Reply:I unfortunately did not get any pictures of the latch. what I did was take a 2" x 2" peice of angle a peice of 1" strap, and a 1" square tubing piece layed out a drawing of my 3" post sitting 1/2" away from my 1.5" gate tube siting flush on the front side. and placed the 1" tubing to where it would sit inside the gate side and the 2" angle sitting on the outside rear of the post and welded the flat strap to the top of them and then a peice of 1/2 x 1/2 to the top of the flat strap for a little handle. The way it works is the hinges will stop the gate from swinging inwards. and the 2" angle stops against the backside rear of the post to keep it from opening outward.....Long and complicated I know. I will try to make a rendering.
Reply:Looks great Turbo. Interesting gate design, I like it. That ought to keep the dogs in and the rif-raf out. Between the gate and the door you get double protection for the tools.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:Looks nice. What kind of finish do you apply (ie., what brand of primer/paint) and what process do you use (prep work, how many coats, etc.)?
Reply:I still say you should get a job at a prison... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I can hopefully find some pictures of some previous jobs I did for the company I actually work for. Maybe then you will change your mind about me being a prison worker! LOL I usually like to more fancy stuff than this but this is what the customer and I came up with what he liked. here is a picture of a lamp I made for my mom for christmas, this is no jail cell material. This finish is a product called insta rust. or you can buy it as a weed killer at home depot (they are blue crystals you add to water and it desolves and you spray your metal with it. acheive your desired look and then I use a clear accrylic sealer. But I finished the gates with what ever primer I have laying around and then I spray them with sherwin williams chem dry quick dry enamel. it dries enough for you to handle it in about 10 minutes and sometimes faster. I apply this with a Wagner statikit electrostatic sprayer. This is easy to obtain nice smoothe finishes while at the same time the paint is electrostatically charged and grounded to the metal (similar to powder coating) the paint will wrap around the metal, take a 1/2" picket for example you can spray it from one side and it will paint the entire picket including the little edges that usually end up light because of the smaller surface area.

Reply:I just did a short gate and fence for my parent's side yard. For that latch I used the Magna Latch. It is a hard polycarbonate so it won't corrode which is nice. You basically pull a knob up to open. It can be locked too.
Reply:I know exactly what magna latches are. I use them on pool gates and such for people with small kids. and yess For the most part I got rid of the swirl marks thank you guys!
Reply:Mr2turbo7Nice work. Very clean. I am sure the customer was satisfied.Does the Wagner Stati-Kit speed up the painting process? Is it faster than a HPLV system? Can you do a small 1/2 inch baluster in one or two passes? What type cleaning process do you do on your metal?I usually paint my square stuff from the corners. Hence, 4 passes per Balusters. If the stati-kit were faster, then I would consider that.
Reply:Yes it is much faster it takes 1 pass sometimes 2. Cleaning wise I use either acetone ore just a bit of laquer thinner. The only down fall of the statikit is that it cost $4000. but it paints at much faster speeds and lays a nice coat of paint down. Thank you for the comments.
Reply:great looking work.where did you get the Wagner statikit electrostatic sprayer ? is it hard to set up and or need any special prep??? dose it spray the primer also?? or will it only work with some paints? summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:The paint spraying unit belongs to the company I work for. I am unsure of where this unit was acquired (sp) It is very easy to set up, no special prep, and It will spray any medium that you can thin with lacquer thinner. |
