Hi all. Im working on modfying my gas tank for my chopper build. I cut out the filler bung on the tank, and made a piece to go back in it. Im using my Lincoln 3200HD, settings on A-2.5ish, gas on about 17. lemme know what ya think. I havnt grinded em down yet to check em, so there completly raw.ThanksDustin
Reply:How do you plan to get the gas in the tank?

Reply:****....I knew I forgot something......lol. No Im relocating it a little bit further towards the front. Its a frisco mounted tank, so Im gonna try and squeeze all the juice I can outta it. It didnt warp much, mainly I think because I tacked along about every 1/2" or so in a criss cross pattern. Do the welds look ok?
Reply:Looks like a cool project you have there. As far as the welds go, the only way to tell you have a good leak proof weld is to give it the water bath test while having a little air pressure in the tank. Do all this before your body work on the tank. You probably will have to do this when the fuel feed bung is in and your top fill cap bung is welded in. T.J.www.tjsperformance.com
Reply:Yeah Im gonna grind the welds down today and re-evaluate. Ill pressure test it once I get it finished. You think thats cool, you should see the rest of the bike
Reply:The welds aren't pretty, but sometimes looks can be deceiving...  The important thing is whether or not the thing is going to leak.  You should do a leak check on it with compressed air and some water.  You ought to do that check after grinding it down.Lets see some more pics of that bike!Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster

Reply:Someday I am going to build a bike after I get my hyd. conversion of my JD2 bender project done and make a frame JIG. This is after I finish all my other projects I have pending.   T.J.www.tjsperformance.com

Reply:If you can't be a pretty welder, be a pretty grinder.
Reply:after you grind off the welds..you have to check for leaks..use something thin like acetone..dont use water.. you dont need moisture in there..if it does leak empty it out and let it sit for awhile..blow some air in it because acetone will evaporate and leave nothing behind..and acetone will find a leak 10 times faster than water if the leak is small.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:For leak testing, nothing beats a little indicator powder on the outside. The best is dye penetrant powder, but cornstarch will work in a pinch. A dyed liquid then shows like crazy. Only hard part is that most dyed fluids are going to be either water base or flamable. There are nonflamable, weld safe dye solutions, but they are pricey and not always available at a local shop.
Reply:I think ya did fine, as long as you haven't been welding for a long time.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:practice, practice, practice...like everyone else says... as long as it doesn't leak then it's goodTennessee Squire Association

Reply:By the way when ya put pressure to your tank see if anyone ya know has the little air pump thats used to pressurize motorcycle forks and all ya need is abot 5 pds,you can get away with a bit more but ive seen  8 pds spring a custom aluminum tank with about 30 hrs of fab time in it...thankfully we were able to get it back in shape but the pucker factor got a lttle high for awhile.. after ya put ur filler bung in check out your cap..if its the vented type ya can use some plumbers putty to close the venting system...just dont forget about it and let it harden or its a good bet ull be buying a new cap( this takes days or hrs if in a hot area so no super rush)we always did our tests by fully submerging the sealed and pressurized tank in water...if ya spot a bubble  pull tank out and hit with a soapy water spray.A little moisture inside the tank is not going to be a problem as you should line the tank after its finished anyhow..por 15 tank selr is about the best stay away from kreem...it tends to come loose inside and clog stuff upJust remember that y ya either need a vent or a vented cap on ur tank and if possible a vent is the best as vented caps will eventualy spell ruin to that high dollar paint job that ull be putting on itbrake line makes a good vent line inside the tank..remeber ya want the top of the vent line at the highest possible point of your tank...advisable to drill exit hole somewhere reletivly hidden on bottom bend ur line to reguired shape and insert thru hole then tack a crner of it  near the filler opening(just be sure to leave enough space that ya dont weld it closed when ya install the bung.If ya have a hard time envisioning it say so and ill make a guiky cad drawing and post itJason
Reply:the welds dont look so great but like ya said they will get grinded off, so as long as it was hot enough to get a good metal melt you should be fine. a tank sealer is always an option if needed after the cap is back on. TIG would have ben a better option but ya gotta use what ya got right.lets see the rest of this thing, not fair to just tease with the tank and hide the rest. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Here it is as of right now....almost there...
Reply:thats not allmost there... if this was "build or bust"....you'd better get moving.. j/k my friend...lets go! more to do!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:ok on build or bust, they dont hafta pay for the parts....I do. If you wanna send me some money, Ill send ya my paypal id
Reply:well i dont know about build or bust but its looking a lot ferther along than mine is. looks good so far, dont give up on her.i atached a pic of how far i have gotten with my choper project. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
