I have been offered at work for them to send me to school to be a machinist.  I was just wondering how many here are both a welder and a machinist?I am tired of Ketchup, I want the Gravy...

Reply:I am..33 yrs now......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Take the training. Machine work has been some of the most rewarding (and challenging) work I've ever done. If you like to learn you'll love the trade. Been at it three years and I learn something new every day.
Reply:For what it is worth: I managed a large fabrication and machine shop with 200 employees. The machinist overall made more money, enjoyed the work more, and at the end of the day they were a little bit cleaner. If you have both skills, and so desire, there will be more opportunities for further advancement as well such as a supervisor or manager of the manufacturing area or perhaps a QC inspector.Scottwelders360.comNew guy.
Reply:I am also. All I can say is learn your math, the more you know, the more you can do.
Reply:I was. Military paid for the training & 50% of the pay while I worked for United Technologies Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks CT. Was great pay and excellent work. Only problem was AC in plant during summers was non existent. If you work at a company that is willing to pay for the training take them up on their offer. Having multiple skills will make you more valuable to the company! Especially should they decide to downside they'll get rid of someone that is dead weight before they get rid of someone  that they have time & money into.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:I am a machinist who can weld (not very well ) but the more you know the more you are worth $$$
Reply:I am a machinist that welds also.Peter
Reply:Learned to weld at the tender age of 20.  While working as a welder at a small machine shop in Arizona I had the chance to learn a little about machining.  Seven years later I got hired as a welder for Komatsu Mining Systems in Peoria, IL.  Learned enough at previous job to transfer to a job as a CNC machinist at Komatsu. They out sourced the machining operations and I took my severance pay and transferred from a Boilermaker shop local to the field construction division of the Boilermakers.  Almost done with my apprenticeship. Skills learned as a machinist come in handy on the job occasionally. An older crane operator on my first construction job told me that anytime I had a chance to learn something that I should jump at the chance.  Best piece of advice that I EVER got!!  Go for it!"The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:It's nice having both skills, I operated manual machines years ago, and recently purchased a CNC mill, it's been fun learning how to use it.Synchowave 180SD  Bernard 3500SS water coolerMillermatic 200Parker Plasma Tec 40dvOperating Engineers Local 12
Reply:Manual machinist here.  I was more of a weldor than a machinist, but i cannot begin to imagine how many parts I have made on that lathe we had.  I was a better lathe operator than mill operator.  but i know enough to be dangerousMechanical Engineer
Reply:Question to the PO:Do you count just those who get paid for their work, or those who do it for their own use, like Farmer Samm? What about those who are temporarily 'retired' from it due to more pressing projects, like painting  or attending Tea Parties?
Reply:I wish I was a machinist too. Does that count?
Reply:Does brake work constitute machining? I guess it does in a limited sense.  I worked as a machinsts helper in a previous position,  I also took a basic class at school on lathe work. Reply:I am/have machined and welded for some time.I really enjoy proto-typing.  I absolutely hated button pushing and parts checking.  Most of the button pushers had to smoke pot, to survive.  It is not my type of job.I use machining for my own parts/builds and also for when the welding slows down.If you can get some free school, get as much as you can get.-Rhyno07 Fowler 200D65 RedFace04 Miller TB 302, 22hpMiller 12RCMiller HF 251-1Lincoln SP135HyperTherm PM 380and a few others... Reply:I have a feeling it will mostly be a button pusher.  We have 4 Haas, 1 Vtec the size of Long Island and three Niles( which is odd, since we own the company).  But if I get in I am sure some of the old timers....  will help me learn more hands on.I am tired of Ketchup, I want the Gravy...
Reply:Don't be satisfied just being a button pusher!  For me the most rewarding part of being a CNC operator was learning how to write and edit programs.  Company programmers are good but once you learn the ins and outs of programs for production runs, you can tweak and fine tune them to really make your job faster and easier.  Something else that I enjoyed (and many hated) was setting up and proving new programs.  That's one job that you have to have your $hit wired tight for!  Learn to do that and you can get a job just about anywhere and will put you way above your average joe."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:When I said button pusher that is what I meant.  Will learn g-code and will teach myself MasterCam.I am tired of Ketchup, I want the Gravy...
Reply:Knowledge is power, and free knowledge is the best. My tuition for college is $185 per credit hour right now. Thats $555 per class, if you can get free training go for it. The more knowledge and experiance you have the more options you have for employment. I have worked as a button pushing machinist, button pushing welder, a manual machinist, and a manual welder. The more i know about the different processes the better I am at designing and planning my own projects as well as doing my job at work. Simply said, go for it.Ranger 250 GXTSmith Gas Axe
Reply:I have been doing machine work since 1962. I became certified after two years in a technical school in 1972. I been doing that every since I can remenber. I can weld but would not call myself a Welder. I have  learned alot from welding forums to improve my skill as a welder. I am now trying to improve my abilty in Tig welding which I am sure I can learn alot here on this forum.

Reply:I learned both in HS.....  the Vo-Tech center just opened up a new Machining program after shutting down the old one almost 8-10 years ago.  I hear the company I work for had alot to to with it.  There's just no trained machinists left in the area.  Personally I Have a set of small machines as I'm a model builder mostly.

There's just no trained machinists left in the area.I learned in college. I got an A.A in welding and fabrication and I tested out of enough classes that I took several machining classes on the side. I can be a "machine tender" and run simple things but I don't call myself a machinist.good skill to have, really helps to be able to machine something up or size it prior to weld.
