If your in school learning to weld and your having a hard time getting real help from your instructor its probably because he wants you to figure out the problem yourself or he's an idiot that don't know jack or jill for that matter.  So what do you do if you have this kind of situation?  Well the answer is real easy because I'm in this boat at the moment so here is the first answer of three.(1) Do your homework and research your problem, chances are very high that the problem is covered in one of your books and the chances are even higher that its covered somewhere on the web such as can be found here on this site.  I've solved most of my problems just by researching a problem after going to my instructor only to have him run a few beads and go " hmmm, that is really odd that its happening to me as well, I've got no idea " and believe me it's a good feeling figuring out a problem on your own.  In fact one of my problems that I figured out netted me the best grade in the class on a bend test and after telling my wife I got an atta boy from her!(2) Don't be afraid to ask for help from other more knowledgeable welders again such as can be found here or at your local welder bar though I do recommend not asking the guys like one eyed Joe or two fingered Eddy.  There's nothing wrong with asking a seasoned pro about a problem and though you may get a ribbing for a vertical up weld having a bigger beer gut than a fat Irish man most are very helpful and patient except for that one guy with the creepy smile who carries around a barbie doll, I'd walk the other way if I were you.(3) Finally be sure to do your homework while asking for help from those pro's because it's always good to learn and you may come across something that will help you on a new problem down the road and above all don't burn the bridges you make with those who help you because a pissed off welder knows how to do more with electricity and gas than a 15yr old with a lighter after a double beef and bean burrito dinner.

Reply:I would of never guessed that you are supposed to do your homework and try to figure stuff out on your own. Glad it worked for ya.JerodHypertherm 30Miller Syncrowave 200Millermatic 140and a propane torch and hanger if all else fails
Reply:Your missing the point obviously.  I have an instructor that is either not being helpful on purpose or doesnt know squat and when your paying $20.80 an hour or more it can get frustrating to say the least.  For the most part I have learned from the books and online articles and from here than I have from the instructor and havent had him show me anything in a few months.  As a definite two of the other instructors at the school have no idea at all what so ever about what they are doing as one has failed the standard application test just put in place and the other is telling his students to cut new rods in half to work on 6G pipe.I'm sure most everyone knows to do their homework but having a lame duck instructor can throw things off.
