So last night my girlfriend says, "john, there is water all over the kitchen floor". Low and behold, I look and sure enough - water. I open the kitchen sink cabinet - water. Look around at the plastic piping - the cast nut on the sink actually cracked in half from age...allowing the pipe to slightly drop and water to leak. Here is the before: Attached ImagesJohn - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:The right side sink drain nut fitting was the culprit. You can see it's disconnected in the picture. For those that don't know, normally black piping is used/reserved for mobile homes and RV's. Not sure why, some plumbing rule. So, the original owner of the house was a contractor and must have used his "spare" stuff. UGH! So basically the replacement piece I needed wasn't available. He had a "hybrid" kitchen sink unit. Went to the Ace, bought a few items and cleaned it up: AFTER - Attached ImagesJohn - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:The new style "T" has diverters in them, so the drains can face this way. Also below the big T, the lower center section has a T in it for the dishwasher drain. This was the piece of the nut that broke that was way up high on the right side sink drain. Much cleaner, much better - new stuff!John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Been there done that...Not doing it again... I worked for a plumber for 8 months..Got my "badge" in toilets..Dishwashers..Sinks and Faucets..And drains...And for those that dont know..The pitch for drain pipes that go to the septic/street is 1/4" per foot.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:So, if you have a 10 foot run, it has to drop 2.5 inches?John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:All the drains in my house are black (ABS).....And now that I think about it, all the neighbors houses are all black pipe too.....Is this a new restriction?I don't remember seeing anything but black (ABS) drain pipe back when the houses in my neighborhood were built. (35 years ago)Patrick
Reply:This thread brings back horrors of last year at exactly this weekend. Right before my g/f birthday party my sink clogged. Called the plumber out. he first tried the balloon on a hose trick. As he was telling me a story of flooding a kitchen once I thought to myself I hope I sealed up my new wood floor well enough. Next thing you know he pulls the hose from the drainout and here comes all the water. filled my kitchen floor! Boy did he get to mopin quick.Patriot Performance AutoLincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln AC-225 StickVictor Journeyman O/AQuincy QT-5 Compressor

Reply:Good story Patriot, that's what I had envisioned when she said water. Good thing I had an old cook pan under the right sink. It caught most of what started to leak past. Sober and Sandy - not sure on the black piping. It may be thicker. I was working with the white PVC and it was fairly thin. I had to trim a few pieces and traced around them with a utilty knife and it seperated quick. The black piping was probably used 10 years ago as the standard, now everything is white for some reason. I will go to ACE and/or call my contractor friend and ask what the deal-i-o is with white vs. black piping.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:AFAIK, they are both OK to use for drains.Local code may not allow the glueing of the two materials together. Some slight mechanical differences between the plastics (PVC is more brittle than ABS by a factor of 2x+, PVC gets softer and sags at a lower temperature than ABS). Different solvent cements are used for the different plastics. PVC usually is supposed to get the purple cleaner/primer before the solvent cement is applied, so you'll often have the big purple streaks/drips all over the place (some plumbers are not all that neat about things!) The ABS cleaner/primer is clear/white, but the solvent cement may be a white/off-white snot.If the pipes are both Sch 40, then they should be comparable in thickness. But DWV, and especially the sink drain tail pipes are pretty thin. And the slope requirement for drain pipes MAY vary depending on diameter and jurisdiction. Quick example, 3" diameter and under pipe then slope is 1/4" per foot but 4" or larger then slope is 1/8" per foot. [Mesa County Colorado, 2000 Universal Plumbing Code, with amendments. http://www.mesacounty.us/building/res_plumbing.htm ]And another safety reminder, do NOT use plastic pipe for compressed gas or compressed air. Search the forum or use google/whatever for more info about failures of plastic PVC pipe in compressed air systems.Last edited by MoonRise; 02-02-2007 at 10:43 AM.

Reply:all i want to know is, how did you turn your welder down low enough to weld up abs plastic? or did you braze, if so, what was the filler?j/k, mine went out to here about 3 months ago, the larger metal nut on the bottom side of the sink went out and i couldn't get the channel locks or the pipe wrench on it. i went to the shed and was dragging the plasma cutter back when the wife went to squalling, whoaaa buddy, you ain't burning down the house, i tell her, look at me, i'm soaked the whole thing is soaked, it won't burn. (it had been leaking for 3 days before i was informed of this) so i put the plasma up and grabbed the good ole IR die grinder. that's ok, 45 secs that puppy was licked."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
