Well ok, its only up 11.5 feet  But the boss asked me to design and build a free standing staircase to replace the sketchy ladder that was there since the shop got built.This is what I came up with. Reply:What, no ornamental scrolls or corbels or finials?   It looks strong and sturdy and 'fits' the surroundings.  Good job.Wait, is that a pinhole on the third tread's left bracket?    Did you assemble and weld it all in place, or did you tack the tread brackets onto the stringers at ground level and then put the treads in?What rise and run did you end up with?  Did you meet your area's building code requirements for stair spacing, construction, and tolerances?  Yeah, some building codes are REAL strict about stair construction.  Like 1/8" MAX variation between risers heights from step to step and something like 3/8" MAX variation between shortest to tallest riser height.And I don't even know what OSHA requires for stairs and handrails.Hey, I -like- how the job looks and I'm sure it is lots better and safer than the old ladder, I'm just asking the questions to see if you took the code requirements into account.
Reply:thanks guys,Moonrise, I submitted a draft of my proposed design to the building's original designer as requested by the district manager who runs the shop. I suppose that engineer still advises the owners about modifications that they want done to the shop as he's drafted a few additions for us as well.I've built all the handrails in the shop to code back when they were still building the shop, so I simply copied my previous dimensions and that seemed to satisfy everyone.I went with an 9.5x8.5" riser x run steps which I never specified with the engineer but I measered 3 different steps in the shop and they were all different from each other anyway.Freelance Fabber91 GMC 3500 Portable welding truckLincoln Weldanpower 8000 gas welderMiller CST 250 Smaw/Gtaw inverterMillermatic 210 gmaw line welderHyperterm plasma
Reply:As long as everyone is happy, and the power-that-be signed off on it, Good job.And I -think- you meant you have 8.5" x 9.5" rise and run (the run is almost always bigger than the rise).Like I mentioned, building codes can be -real- picky about stairs.

Reply:Pretty heavy duty.No safety problems with that build.I just had to look as I want to build a stairway for a shooting plattform for archery and I want mine even higher.But the material you used is a little overkill for my needs.I worked for a large company with a very big maintanance dept.They would hire you on the spot if they had an opening just by taking a look at that custom stairs.That shurely meets any osha guidlines.
