The local Home Depot carries Lincoln Electric MIG welding wire (solid core) or I could go to a welding store (Airgas Gaspro, or Air Liquide) to get the Miller brand welding wire.Is it worth it to spend more money for the Miller brand welding wire?  Or are they all the same?-- This space for rent.  Inquire within.
Reply:If you are getting Lincoln L-50 or L-56 made in the USA, then (in my opinion) you are getting one of the best solid mild steel filler metals available. Another top choice would be ESAB. The last time I checked, which has been a year or more, Miller was re-spooling and private labeling someone else's wire.
Reply:I've had good luck witth the good brand names, Lincoln, Miller, Esab etc. The one I've had the worst luck with and refuse to even look at is BonARC. They bought it here at work because it was the cheapest price on tender, a bunch of us got together and refused to use it. It wouldn't feed properly, pinholed and was otherwise crap. Ended up with Miller and haven't had a problem....Mike
Reply:All wire is not the same. Cheep import wire sold at places like HF often is not as good as wire from some of the bigger brands, Hobart, Essab, Lincoln etc.Usually I get my wire at the LWS. I forget the brand right now. In a pinch I've grabbed small rolls of the Lincoln wire from Depot or Hobart wire from Tractor Supply and had good results with all of them..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:I have always had great wire from McKay, and also there rods."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:I have liked the Lincoln, Hobart and Inweld brands. I haven't used generic or off brand wire. If I am going to spend my cash on good metal, take the time to cut it, prep it, lay it out and weld it, I certainly don't want my efforts to be for naught due to a poor quality weld from some cheap wire. I need all the help I can get just making a nice looking weld, I don't need to be hampered by junky wire!Just another clown trying to be cool
Reply:I use Air Liquide S- 6, .030 for 12 yrs now and like it. They had a bad batch a few years ago( wire wasn't coiled on the spool with the right twist= bad feed) but no problems now. Used Lincoln but could see a big diff. Just my nickle worth, 200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:i try to stick to made in the USA as far as my purchases
Reply:had good luck with lincoln innershield and lincoln rods, never used their solid wire but no reason to think it wouldnt be quality.FelonCaution lurker lives here" hmmm That is serious, pass the ganja and pick up a  24 of MGD"
Reply:Go by the AWS classification and chemistry, then most will react the same, except for the drawing dye lubricant used.  JGSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :

Reply:Lincoln wire here, both solid and fluxcore.

Reply:Originally Posted by JayLThanks for the reply. Do you happen to know if the wire is US made or an import.I'm planning to buy a welder from them and am contemplating getting some wires too. They don't sell Hobart wires on their site.
Reply:I got a 2lb spool of Lincoln L-56 wire from my local Lowes and its Hecho en Mexico,Is that bad? SQUARE WAVE 175 TIG   DUAL MIG 151

Reply:Good question too is how many companies are making wire, and how many brands are coming from those companies. I'd be real surprised if there's a third of the makers as there are brands.B200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:Originally Posted by nosleepnoWeldcote is pretty decent brand from what I have seen. Far better than HF or some other generic, but not as good as Lincoln or Hobart, or Radnor.
Reply:I think Radnor was making wire way before Lincoln made the purchase so to say Radnor wire is made by Lincoln is more a play on words than a physical fact. I realized something was amiss with the statement "Radnor is the same as Lincoln" when the guy behind the counter had to roll his eyes way up and away trying to feed that sheet to me.  Product manufacturers often buy their competition, strip off any excess profits yet leave the product and/or brand alone. Leave it alone for awhile anyway. If anything they'll starve their budget and cheapen the product line so as to stear people toward the parent brand and still capture the market of the loyal buyers."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Originally Posted by MaedarIt's true, a lot of "house brand" wires are just individually packaged, by major manufacturers.e.g. Radnor (Airgas's house brand) filler metals are made by Lincoln.
Reply:One of the best, Kiswel KC-28.  General purpose solid wire ER70S-6 used by all the big manufacturers globally. Here is some info on mig welding wireYes you can get very cheap mig wire.  But a quality wire will offer far better performance for dedicated welding manufacturers. Wire diameter tolerance, wire chemical composition, how hard or how soft the wire is and a range of other things affect welding wire performance.  And ultimately this effects the end weld quality.Nothing worse than having a workshop full of workers stopping to fix the mig gun cause the wire won't come out properly.I use any wire that is .030 and 70S-6. I have run so much mig wire over the last 35 years from a dozen shops that it all works fine. I used to love it when i was a Millwright in the big factory and a welder would shut down the weld line because his wire was "bad". So i would change the spool while he was out smoking. I ended up with about a dozen 33# rolls that ran just fine at my house but i don't smoke  ...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:Weldrwomn nailed it on the nose...Radnor/Airgas gets their wire from everyone. Here of late, it has been Pinnacle wire which is a Korean wire. It isn't bad at all. I have used Radnor wire that was definitely Hobart and some that was definitely Linc/Harris. My machine hated that stuff as it hated all Linc and Harris wires. The best way to pick a wire is run it in the machine. Anyone that tells you they are all the same is sadly misinformed. They all react differently within the specs. Machines will like some wires and weld like a dream with them...others they hate and throw tantrums and fits every time you use it. Best thing to do is try a bunch of them and take notes. Once you find what runs best, stick with it and pray they don't switch the wire recipe like Lincoln did with the L-56. It used to be the benchmark of all solid wires....now, not so much.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
