Vertical Up..Down..And "Sideways"..

Well I was board this morning sooooo....What better to do than "play some games" while the lathe turns...Tig process..Vertical up prep..Vertical up weld..Vertical down weld..Vert sideways steel prep..Vertical sideways steel weld..Now on to the Aluminum portion of this program..(Next post)...zap!Last edited by zapster; 03-10-2007 at 11:29 AM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:So do you feel you visually noticed any difference in any of the travel directions that indicated a better penetration factor between any of the coupons? Did you see any notable difference in the amount of wire you used running the vert up vs. the down? Just curious....._________________Chris

Reply:Ok, what Ive learned (from class so far) is that downhill just plain sucks.  With mig, its a bear to get good penetration because of gravity pushing the puddle along.  What I was told, is that its mostly used on thin stuff like sheet metal, and 3/16 is the max you want to go when doing it.  I guess it has its place, and is something of a challenge for me (I can weld it, but getting full penetration is the trick).  With up and mig, you fight a convex narrow bead that is tricky to control.  Too hot, wire not right at the edge of the puddle sags out, wire shoots through etc etc...I did a gas weld in the up once.  I did it just to see if it was possible.  It was ugly, but was sound.  Didnt look anything like zaps example with the tig.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.

Reply:weather you weld vert.up or down flat or horizontal if the joint are all the sameit will take the same amount of filler with vert down you just put down less per pass and run more passes as for penetration it's less than vert up but with the right joint prep. and good fusion the weld will be just as goodChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder

Reply:Yeah its called horizontal.  Vert up does leave better penetration.  Say if you want a challenge..... try achieving spray arc in GMAW doing vert up on 3/8". weld it like you own it
