Had a neat-o type job today..Have done these before..Add a new rear edge "lip" and re-machine the surfaces..Here's the chuck with the grooves already machined in it..Here is the new "lip" edge..(note how the champhers are even both sides)..Tack it real good before you start..Now just heat and beat!!When you get to the end of the bend..tack it while it's still red hot and give the area a whack with the hammer after..It will keep the tack "tight"..On to the next process.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ok here we go with the welding..Once in awhile I'm asked about the "torch angle" when I do stuff like this so here is how I "sit" with the torch..Notice the square piece of metal I have my torch hand on..Get Comfy!!!Ok now weld..Here is the root pass on the rear of the chuck..Here is pass #2Now on to our next process.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Now to finish up..See how the champhers line up with each other..This is Very important if you want any weld left after machining...Ok here is the champherd front side weld..Now into the lathe for finishing..There goes my nice new weld.. Here is the "lip" finished..Here is the chuck finished with a new 2.6 degree angle machined into the front leading edge.. Now I just have 4 more to do.. I get all the fun jobs... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Looks great as usual. Is that piece a worn out lip or is that the process to make those? Looks like the latter...but just asking. What is its function?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:I like the consistency of pass #2, very uniform weave pattern.

Reply:Wheres your other glove you know your had was burning when you got home.  I weld the same way, you have more control of the rod.  If you put sunblock on it wont burn as bad.  But if you don't put block and keep welding like that that will be a big cancer ball in a few years.
Reply:Nice job Zap! Did you ground the chamfer? What angle??My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!

Reply:I use TWO gloves.  I had a guy that worked for me and only used one.  I would go to weld something and could only find one glove.  Frustrating.I don't care how any one else welds.  I have burnt my hands enough.David
Reply:We have beaten the "one glove two gloves" horse to death and back 5 times over on these boards... Do what makes you happy and go about your buisness..I like one glove  and its white to boot.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:vary cool vary good job nice weld
Reply:nice work as usual... u certainly do a lot of....round...things
Reply:I wish I could lay down a Tig bead like that, one day I'll get that good. Why run the short back-cap on the torch? I always thought the longer cap helped cool the torch, and I would think on a project like that you would need all the cooling you can get. Not bashing, just asking.
Reply:Superior weld!!! ?for the second pass do you weave with your machine hand or just increase the torch distance???cheers!Idealarc 300\300 TIG AC\DC
Reply:Zap,Lovely welds of course, seems a shame to turn them into so much swarf! However, technical question: what effect does heating the new CRS lip to white heat to bend it have on its material properties? Does the whole lip end up as one big ol' HAZ, and if so, how does this alters its performance (esp. as regards machining it post-weldup)?

Reply:ZAP, what is your real name anyway? With a big long weld like that why not just use MIG? it would up your production, or are you welding some special TIG only alloy.?
