any suggestions to get started on my bbq smoker

My son has had the shop tied up with work on his boat.I am eager to get started on my smoker.The first pict, are of the cabinet I picked up for smoking.I thought the wall thickness was to thin for BBqing so I picked up the tank and want to either split in half and hinge it or just make a nice access door with a grate inside.I have a nice size cast iron woodstove for a fire box.I have seen some rigs that have firebox on one end with tank in middle then a simular enclosuer on the other end of tank with racks.Thus making use of both the tank as a cooker and the enclosure on end for smoking.I see most tanks just have a firebox welded right to the mane tank.Do you cut out the most of the end of firebox where it enters tank or do you just send in the smoke off of the wood stove outlet to chimney?

Reply:Thanks it is just sitting on the drop trailer so I can move it easy.I will be building a new trailer so it is alighned with firebox on right cooker tank in the middle and stainless  smoker on the opposite end.I am trying to decide if I should open one large door in the tank thus making grating installation easy.Or put two doors so you can just open either side without opening entire top.Or I could split the tank horrizontal and stiffen both halves with angle iron so it shuts flush.I have a large quantity of 1/4 x 1,1/2 flat bar to form and weld around the doors so they seal good if I decide to go with a door on hinges.Last edited by welditnow; 03-19-2007 at 03:19 AM.

Reply:broncstomperThanks for the link.But as long as I caught you here for a bit do you think this propane burner would work to regulate the temp better.I then could either use wood from the fire box or just add some chips above the burner in a pan.I think I could regulate the temp better with propane.I will just make a cutout on the underside of tank thus keeping all propane lines on the outside of tank.http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...70_23798_23798

It sure looks like a wood burning stove, if thats the case some of those things have a "Catylitic convertor"?? thing to help the exhaust be cleaner and to more effeciently (wrong spelling) burn the wood. If it has one I don't know what it would do to the meat or the tast. Just a thought. Looks like the only thing you need now is a pig a cow and some chicken.. Oh. alot of cold beer ready when the meat's done.
