Hi folks.Sorry if I posted this in the wrong spotLooking for some information on trailer axels. House trailer axels in particular. My buddy is bringing over a used homemade trailer that he recently purchased for a few repairs and is wanting to figure out a estimated weight capacity of the trailer or at least what these type of axles are designed to hold. A picture would be great (a 1000 words right?) but I don't have one. I can say that the way the wheels bolt on is not the same as say an average truck wheel would bolt on. The seller told my buddy that the axels are from a house trailer.  Anyone know about these axles? This trailer is a 20' flatbed with a dual axel configureation. I have seen setups like this around town..so potentially its not that uncommon of a setup. Thanksjshlitz
Reply:Take a look at the springs, it should only be one spring, if it is only one spring, then its a 5000 pound spring.  If it is only one spring your going to want to change them out. they are going to want to make your trailer bounce.
Reply:Should be 3 ton per axle.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:A friend of mine works with campers, motor homes, trailers, etc. He says the axles are pretty heavy duty (look what they move) But, the bearings are not the best. They are basically used one way. Tow it to the park, pull the tongue and axles, and it usually doesn't move again. You could probably put better bearings in them and be good. Maybe even change out the hubs for more common wheels.------------john

Reply:http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...er/Trailer.htmThis guy does a very nice rundown on these axles.  I've used them on several heavy use trailers and never had a problem...except replacing the tires.  The bearings are fine...however, sometimes you have no idea how long they have been sitting and the grease may be gone.  Some of these axles are 30+ years old and may have come from under a burned mobile home...this means quality can be pretty variable...However, with a bit of preemptive checking and maintainence, they are great...some states have laws against using them in newly built home-brew trailers.  That's something you should check if this thing has never been tagged or whatever is required for on-road trailers where you live.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Man you guys are great! Those are the ones Slag. The spring packs are a multi leaf..not sure how many yet. We will repack/ replace bearings when we go through this thing. My buddy was hopeing the trailer would have a max capacity of close to 4 ton.. sounds like that at least the axels are up to the job. The article on pirate is good, shows a step by step break down of the axel dissassembly. I will post some pics of this thing when we finish. Thanks!shlitz
