Well, I have been renting a shop, and lost it due to the land being sold. So while the guys are moving everything this week (WHAT A PAIN!!!) You think a house is bad trying moving the contents of a shop..... Anyway, I came to the house and went out to my old shelter and started playing with a roller I have been wanting to build. I'm doing the basic frame with a torch, grinder, and welder. That's all I keep here at the house. Well, see what ya think and throw some opinions at it. ~JacksonStarted with cutting out my two front and back plates. Used 3/8"... Reply:Then I used some scrap 2x3 Tubing and clamped the plates together and after squaring them I tacked them down on the base plate. Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Then I cut some 1/2" X 3" flat bar and welded in for the top. Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Next, I cut some more flat bar, and welded in for the lower sides. Then I cut the whole unit out of the plate after all that was welded. The section of the plate sticking off to the back is where the motor will mount.... Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Then I lay the unit over and start laying out where I want my bushings for the shafts welded in at. Then cut them out. I will have to cut the back side to match and do some grinding to clean it all up, then maybe tomorrow I can have a lathe set back up where I can turn the bushings and get them welded in. I'll take some more pics as I go. ~Jackson Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:cool but i got to ask why weld it then cut holes?ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Well to be honest, there is no reason, haha Mainly I just wasn't sure exactly on the spacing of the rollers, and what size tubing I had in the scrap pile that I could make the bushings with so I went ahead and started on what i could, and then cut the holes out afterwards when I found something that would work. If i was building this unit for a client I would go with a different approach all together, but considering I'll be the one to use it I am going purely for functional.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:"Build it then make the prints"DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Not to sound like a dummy...And I'm a dummy..(ask mrs zap)What is it gonna be for? Looks like a big overhead trolley plate.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:He's building a ring roller or tubing roller. It has several names - basically to roll long stock into circular designs. Something similar to this: http://www.shopoutfitters.com/RingRoller.htmlJohn - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Yea microzone is right. I have always heard them called a "pyramid roller" or "angle roller" The picture below is one I have looked at to get my idea. I have been using a friends who has retired and not in as good a health as he once was so It was time to either build one or buy one. I prefer to build it since I have plenty of material left over from various jobs and only have to buy the motor control and sprockets. Reply:I hear ya Zap...... You probably were thinking of a plate roll or slip roll, I have some 8 inch shafts I got from a guy a month or two ago with that project in mind, but I have to get my shop set back up and running first.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:do both the bottom rollers pull or just 1? Looks simple enough. How are you mounting your bearings?DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Yes, Both bottom shafts will drive. I'll be using 2" shafts and I am going to turn a sleeve that will take bronze bushings that can be greased, and weld it into the housing so that the shafts just slide thru, and driven from the back with sprockets. I have an old gear box Dad scrounged up years ago with a 1hp motor that should drive it with no problem. I have seen some that were hand driven, infact the one in that picture is hand driven, but It will wear you out if you have several pieces to form.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
