Hey yall...Im just looking for some advice here... I lurk around here alot, trying to learn everything i can. Last night i went out and ran some beads... Can you guys tell me how i did, and how to make them better??It was late, and i was tired, so im not too sure which were 7018 and which were 6011. The 7018 is my preference, it seems easier to use and looks better to me... But thats just me..Go easy on me, my entire welding expierence consists of whatevers missing from my two 5 pound containers, which isnt much Im practicing on a twisted, mangled peice of disk harrow that i found in the scrap bin, so none of these were level. Some were pretty close, and some were unhill or downhill... Allright guys, what do you think??
Reply:i have seen alot worse starting out bud. i would make sure ya have the right settin for the rod your using. and practice keeping steady. keep practicing you'll get it. good luck
Reply:What pattern are you using when laying these beads?Hobbyist of welding mainly automotiveMiller Dynasty 200Millermatic 185
Reply:Watch your travel speed too some look to slow and some look to fast. travel angle is another thing to watch for and arc length. once again good luck
Reply:You will be fine based on your start shown here. Good luck.

Reply:Some porosity in there, make sure to keep a close eye on your arc length.  To long or to short and you will start to get holes in it.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:When y'all get done yukin' it up, and slappin' each other on the back............Stringers on plate suck, no line to follow.OP, after you get comfortable running the rod, try some fillets, or flat beveled joints.  You will have a definite line to follow.High bead, ropy looking, means either too slow travel, or too low amps.  A flatter hotter bead is what you're looking for.7018.......bury that rod in the metal, it should feel like you're dragging it along the top surface of the plate.Rod  Best way to learn.  Stay away from the easy evils of wire.  I've been messing too much with wire, and today was a cluster..... when I ran some rod  The darkside had a grip on me, but I was able to fight it off."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Back to my "experience"..............The ironlike talons circled my body, piercing my skin in many places.  Through the pain and tears, my faith came to comfort me.The evils of the wire feeder fought to entrap my mind, the angel on my shoulder bathed my cerebrum in thoughts of slag.  Smoke, slag, debris.  My mind started to focus on the light.Like a drowning man reaching out for a rope, my mind started to climb out of the abys.  Climbing towards the warmth of the Sun.As my head burst through the shielding gas, a warm loving feeling enveloped me.  It was the ROD.  I had made the journey, and at long last, had come home"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Haha Samm.   I prefer my stick rod, slag and smoke in coil form.  Fluxcore is like "turbo stick".  Give it a try some time.  Best way to get straight lines practicing beads on plate is to start at one edge of the plate and run one straight bead right next to the edge all the way across.  Then the next bead run it right down the toe line of the first bead so half of the second bead overlaps half of the first bead.  Keep working your way down the plate until you have a 'pad of beads' built up that fill up the whole plate with no voids.  This teaches bead stacking for multiple pass welds as well as teaching good slag removal between passes and also teaches 'surfacing', which is what making a pad of beads is.  It is used in machine shops to build up a worn surface which is then machined down to the specified thickness/height of the finished part.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:i didnt read all the replies so dont know if this has been said already, the porosity you see in the beginning of your welds is coming from your arc length being too long i believe. it is alright to allow the 7018 rod to even touch the surface metal.. keep the arc right in the puddle basically and keep the rod moving at a steady speed. As the rod burns, just keep the arc in the puddle, and the rod will basically 'drag' itself.  The speed is dependent on the amperage and the thickness of yuor rod and material. looks to me like you are running 1/8" rod but hard to tell because theres nothing in pics that give any sense of proportion . i also see a lot of spatter.. and your weld bead is laid out very flat. 7018 doesnt spatter much if any at all so this means that you have your amperage set too high. im guessing you are in the range of 120+ amps when you should probably be around 90. the next thing you should practice,  instead of running stringers spaced out like that, practice overlapping them. You should overlap them about 33% to 50%
Reply:Take a look at the beads in the video below....smooth and deep:http://www.wcwelding.com/mig-welding.html
