I've been getting some practice welding with flux core MIG and I need to start looking into getting a tank.  I was looking at the filled Internet ones until someone on the forum said that you might not be able to get it re-filled locally.  Can anyone recommend places for purchase, refilling, leasing or whatever is normal around the Atlanta area (preferably North of Atlanta)? If its important...  I will only be welding as a hobby.  I want to work with Stainless and I understand I need two regulators so I can flush the backside of the weld.  I'll be doing relatively thin stuff (nothing over a 1/4 inch).  Thanks.

Reply:Good morning, Inquisitor.I live north of Atlanta in Dalton. The AirGas guys here are great to work with and will exchange any bottle for a filled one of theirs. I have bought a few bottles on Craigslist and they gladly exchanged them, didn't even worry about the hydro date. But I have read many posts on here where guys had problems exchanging with AirGas and other LWS places. Best thing is to ask them before you buy a bottle to see what their policy is. Or, drive to Dalton and exchange it. Of course if you buy your welder and supplies from them, they are much more likely to work with you. You can always buy your bottle from them, and then there is no question. Reply:Reading on the forum... AirGas... you either have good luck or terrible luck with them.  I wasn't sure what our was.  In this Internet, everything is posted, getting gas seem so mid-evil.  Leasing, renting, owning... and prices kept so close to the vest that its hard to get a clue.  I'm in Roswell, so someone suggested Praxair in Marietta also.  But I'll look into the smithwelding.Thanks.
Reply:I don't think it's legal to ship a filled pressure tank, so any tank you buy on the internet will be empty when you receive it.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:You know... I've read the same thing, in many places.  But I've found several companies that seem to be flying under the radar.  However, one company did mention a hazmat charge.  So maybe its legal.
Reply:I'm not trying to milk the last dime by wanting to go to the Internet.  I'd be quite willing to go to a local and buy the tank if I can get it re-filled.  But reading some of the horror stories on this site, I just don't want to get into a never ending monthly charge (whether I weld or not).  I might get an 80 and re-fill it once a year.  I know I'm going to be an insignificant customer and I don't expect to be treated like a king, but neither do I want to pay through the nose.
Reply:I buy my bottles and have the filled or exchanged when needed.  I buy them used on Craig's List, but have bought them new at Airgas as well.  This works for me.  Costs a bit more initially than leasing but once that initial cost is paid, there are no recurring monthly costs, only gas fill cost, which is the same whether I buy or rent.  Exchanging the bottles ensures that they're always within the test date.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:155 Cu Foot. @ smith is $199 and $24 to refill 100% argon.just got off the phone with them.
Reply:Thank you socoj2.This was my reference point on the Internet, so that's even lower than mail order.  Sounds like a no brainer to me.http://www.weldfabulous.com/Cutting-...-p7244207.html
Reply:You know... I just got off the phone with smithwelding.  I didn't really expect someone to give me the time of day with my volume.  But he was real friendly and explained the price and how they do things.  I told him I'd be doing SS and he said the price for the Tri Mix (Helium/Argon and something else) would be a little higher on the re-fill.  I'll be heading up there next week to get one.

Reply:Thanks again socoj2.  SmithWelding was friendly and helpful especially considering my noob questions.  Got the 125 cu-ft 75/25 for $199.  Any suggestions for the scrap steel for practicing (Perimeter, North 400 or North 575)?
