Have to replace some Bit inserts on a Rock Core barrel used on a Texoma Drill. Have never tackled one before.  Have done many Excavator/backhoe buckets, and repairs on HDD Tooling...Drillheads,Backreamers etc.Don't have pics, but the Core barrel is 48" diameter, has carbide teeth that drive in and out of the inserts that are welded to the barrel.   Anyone have experience with these? Any help would be appreciated.
Reply:Replacing the insert holders is not a big deal.  Just wash them off with an angled torch tip, clean up the mess, weld new holder in the exact same spot in the exact angle it came off.  They usually run in a v shape pattern from the center out.  I usually cut all the bad or worn ones out, then clean up (grinder), tack on all the new ones in the right location, then get to welding them out. Lots of 7018 will be consumed. Use a needle gun if you can for any stubborn slag.If working in the machine on the conveyor ( I'm assuming it's like a CMI asphalt crusher) make sure you lock out and tag it.  Otherwise, make sure you have the key so no one starts up the dang machine.Salas Repair General Welding & Fabrication
Reply:stymie,it's a drill rig used (by the Co. I work for) to  drill pole holes for Traffic cameras, signal Light poles etc, when rock is encountered. it's usually either a rock Auger,or the Core barrel to get the hole in.What you describe is sorta what I thought tho as far as replacing the inserts....just wanted to get an experienced take on it.      I sure appreciate the input my Friend.
Reply:In the tunneling industry we use tons of carbide. On the alpine miners and the tunnel boring machines, which are rotating cutters,we make a jig to install new inserts. the trick is that no tooth sticks out more than the rest,if it does it's doing all the work and the rest get a free ride.Secondly we stagger each one slightly (1'8" to 1'4" depending on rock hardness) so each one is cutting a different groove.it helps to cut the rock.Sort of like a saw as compared to a knife. Try it and you will get more life out of the thing before the next rebuild.tractor,loader.dozer,backhoe,and all the tools to keep em movin
