Hey guys,I am kinda going Tim "The Toolman" Taylor on my son's motorscooter. You know, the kind where you stand up and twist the throttle. It currently has a 49cc 2-stroke motor on it. I have no idea what the HP rating is on it. But I want to put this motor on it: Tecumseh 5.5HP PowerSport OHV Engine.Northern Tool has it listed as catalog item: 60515-2705 for $299.99.It has all that I want, but was wondering if anyone knew if Honda had a comparable motor. The Tecumseh comes set up with an RV throttle, electronic ignition, cast iron cylinder bore and flywheel, with ball bearings.I can't seem to find the right Honda information to compare. Any one???Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:I've had several Tecumseh engines on air compressors, and other things.  In my honest opinion they are chit....  I have had carb trouble on almost all of them after a time, especially if they ever get rained on.  I have now started using honda motors and as far as I am concerned they are one of the best air cooled engines I have ever owned.  99% of the time they crank on the first pull.  I have one on an air compressor mounted on a serivce rig that never gets covered, and stays in the elements all the time.  Its now 3 years old and never fails to crank or give me trouble.  As far as I am concerned Give me the honda...  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:The Honda GX series engines are reliable, industrial quality engines right out of the box which meet your requirements.  My grand-nephew and I have raced using Honda GX-160's modified for racing.  Ours start out as 5.5 Hp but with minimal changes (Header, small carb changes, timing revised, combustion chamber volume minimized) these engines are in the 6.5HP range at 3400 rpm.  The senior drivers use the Honda GX200 which starts life as 6.5 HP and goes up from there.  Both Juniors and Seniors routinely turn these up to 6000 with occasional 6400 RPM.  I have also seen folks run all the way up to the GX390 engines on both yard karts and open class racing.  The beauty of these Honda engines is that if desired, you can find parts for modification while I have not seen any "hot rod" parts for the Tecumseh's.Richard Gray
Reply:Straight across the board, hp for hp and feature for feature, I wonder what the price spread is between a tecumseh, briggs and honda??
Reply:I would go for a Briggs..  http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.as...atname=engines

Reply:Mooney1el,Thanks, now I know where to look. I couldn't find any info on the Hondas.I didn't want the tecumseh, I wanted those features. Honda, IMO, is the only way to go. Now, where can I find more info on hopping it up like your group does? That sounds like fun! Having just bought 4 Honda ATV's for Christmas, I am sold on their product. Thanks to all who gave opinions, I appreciate it, but I was trying to find out WHICH Honda to look at in comparison. Don't take that as a knock, I am glad that so many people replied, that is why I love this forum. Reply:briggs engines are bullet-proof, but plan on your arm falling off when it comes to starting it.  hondas are the best engines you can buy. i have a mini chopper i built with a GX series motor. it mostly sits because of the jag-off cops in my neighborhood, but if i havent started it for six months and go to start it, it will ALWAYS start on the first of second pull.
Reply:I'll sell you a brand new Techumseh 2-stroke for $50.
Reply:Honda hands down............I love them!!Miller blue star 2eLincoln 175
Reply:Better yet, I have a Yamaha XS650 motor for that cart.
Reply:There is a Honda XR650R motor on Ebay right now, only $2500.
Reply:My wife and I bought a couple Manco minibikes with Tecumseh engines a few years ago.  I wouldn't take home another Tecumseh engine for it!  Briggs and Honda's put the Tecumseh's totally to shame.  A Kohler wouldn't be a bad way to go either.  The XKE-6 (6 horsepower) would make that scooter fly!http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinec...sp?engnID=5260kWhen the  drops the  stops!Check out my website at:  Tombstone 180 ACHandler 120Millermatic 210Powermax 380Harris & Victor torchesSawzallChop Saw
Reply:Ok, I found it. I bought the Honda GX200 6.5HP in stock form from NR Racing. I was really tempted to buy it Race Prepped because it was 20 dollars cheaper RACE PREPPED than in stock form from Northern Tools. But really, does the kid need a race prepped Honda on a little scooter built with a 49cc two stroke? I think so, but I was told by the wife not to be stupid. But here's the kicker: I paid via paypal, the motor was 340.00 and free shipping! But what I didn't know was that I had a $150.00 credit already in my paypal account!!! Whoo hoo! I didn't have to pull a chunk out of my own wallet. I know it's my money, but it was like free money since I didn't know I had it! I will post pics when I get the ball rolling. Still need a clutch, sprockets and chain. Thinking I might make the rear end a dually instead of a single tire.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:I slightly overreved a 10 HP Tucemseh on a riding lawnmower and grenaded it.  I don't like em.
Reply:For what it's worth, we use Max Torque "Draggin Skin" clutches for most of our racing applications.  This is a simple shoe clutch with adjustability for lock-up by changing springs and/or adding weights.  They are easily "Blue printed", PM me and I will tell you how.  We use #35 chain.  Clutches, chain and sprockets are available from American Power Sports or Comet Kart Sales or a host of others.Richard
