I used Tremclad rust paint on my bumpers and side bars on my jeep and I think it sucks. After just a couple months of our winter weather everythings rusting already. I tried spray and brush on.What is a real good paint to use for this outdoor application? Is there some kind of epoxy or other type of paint I should use? I don't mind paying extra for something that stands up to our weather and the salt on the streets. I would like something that's closest to the durability as powdercoating.
Reply:Had the paint fallen/chipped off and that's where you are getting rust?  Is the rust creeping through at the welded joints?  Or is the rust showing up throughout the paint job in every possible place? What was your prep work prior to painting?Did you spray or brush the rusting areas?***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
Reply:Oh, and where is "our" weather?  You can add your location using the UserCP area, so everyone knows where you are.***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
Reply:Give us some more info on your preparation of the bumpers. Where they clear of scale and large rust deposits? We use a product from Sherwin Williams Industrial paints, called Kem Kromic Universal. It is far superior to products like POR15 and so on.There are alot of primers out there that claim to neutralize the rust. If you don't get the loose scale off first though. They will all fail.Patriot Performance AutoLincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln AC-225 StickVictor Journeyman O/AQuincy QT-5 Compressor

Reply:Ok thanks for the replys. I built these 3 yr's ago out of new steel with the usual mill scale and did not remove most of it. I sanded everything (no rust) and spray painted them with the slow dry Tremclad black. Lasted a couple years then started getting rust. Repainted them 2 months, ago with a brush using  Tremclad slow dry (pink can) after sanding everything and all the surface rust down to clean steel(100 grit). Some spots are rusting at weldIng beads but in other area's its rusting just in the middle of a tube.I live in Calgary Canada and we have pretty good winters for 5 months or so, and I think it's the salt the city uses on the streets and the abrasion of sand and gravel that is just eating away at the paint. I am kinda leaning towards truck bed liner at this point as it seems to be the most durable thing I could find, but I like a more shiny finish though. I think the problem is crappy paint that I have been using. I would like to know what most people use for a durable exterior paint on steel. Reply:Step Bars take alot of abuse.  Stepping on (usually not with clean boots) sand kicked up from the road, etc.    Temclad has never lasted will for me either. If you are going to use a direct to metal paint - go to a place like Acklands/Grainger and get commerial/industrial paint (and yes, it does make a difference).  We use Rustoleum.  A couple of coats and then clear coat(optional).  You will find it will last quite well.  We use it on our off road equipment.  Next up is 2 part epoxy paints, then at the high end- powder coating.  It all depends on how much time you have and $$$.If you are not worried about having a perectly smooth or glossy paint job, you might consider some of the roll on bed liner products.  Being rubberized will allow a little give from whats being kicked up on it.Good LuckHere in the Great White NorthMosquitoes can't fly at 40 below
Reply:You did not mention if you are using hardener in the paint. If you are just applying spray can paint, then it will never be hard enough. Use an automotive paint, either acrylic or base/clear with hardener. If your area is particularly destructive, double the hardener in the mix.Bill
Reply:Thanks for the replys. I will go to Acklands and see what they have for heavy duty industrial paint for construction equipment. If that still doesnt work I'll go with truck bed liner.
Reply:Use whatever paint you want, but start with a good foundation.  First, remove all loose rust scale.  Then, wash thoroughly with Ospho or some metal etch.  Rinse thoroughly with clean water and wipe down with solvent.  USE AN EPOXY PRIMER, available through an automotive coatings specialty store or a marine store (below the waterline primer).  Then, topcoat with whatever you want.  Most paints and primers are porous and will allow moisture to penetrate their surface.  To stop rust, you have to have a barrier layer and epoxy works best for this.
