Yes..Here it is...Another roller..I have to be EXTREMLY careful with this one though..One little scratch or dent in it and it is useless..It has been engraved and then chrome plated and is worth a fortune!!Here is the best close-up of the engraving I could get..So now here's the broken end I have to repair..As we can see there is little room for the steady rest..Usually I'd steady rest the roller but not on this one   So here's how this game will be played this time around...Using what little shoulder thats left we first drill it out..About 5" deep..Now we bore it out and leave a 1/4" step inside ..And now we move on to the next post to continue.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ok...Now we insert the bull center into the bore and loose the steady rest..If you look real close to the bottom you can just see the "step"Now we turn the shoulder and loose the step and leave behind a nice 30 degree angle after the "flat" for the new piece to butt up against and the 30 degree angle is for the weld..Here's where the real thinking comes into play..Fortunatly I dont have to think about it untill monday when I fab up the new journal.. To be continued..So stay tuned!!!I get all the fun jobs.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:nice.. what's the roller for?
Reply:There is a matching roller that runs with this one..One on top....Other on bottom..Then "aluminized" paper goes thru them for texture..Like the Christmas (Can I type that? ) wrapping paper..Or the foil found on "high end" beer bottles and champaine and such..There are huge ones that we have repaired in the past that are the same but diffrent..The big ones do the texture like in a vinyl roof on automobiles..Quite a process actually.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:you mean that... non-specific winter holiday happening around December 25? why yes!!! of course you can say that. That does sound like an interesting process.
Reply:Hey Zap,Why'd you use the follower rest and not the steady rest for the initial set-up and machining for the center? Were you able to have the tip of the indicator on the engraved surface at all when you trued it in the chuck and rest?Oh, and you forgot to put your dime in the pictures.   After all, that could be a little roller in some little 'hobby' lathe.     No sense of scale in the pics.

Reply:OK!!Welcome back everyone..!So lets continue..First we need a new replacement journal...Machined .004 bigger than the bore..Now that thats done it's time to shrink it in..The chrome plating will not be damaged in the heating process..Shrunk in..Seeing as the replacement journal is made from 4150 it must be pre-heated before welding to prevent cracking..So heat it up!!This is the end result after 3 root passes and 1 cover..200 Amps..70S-2 1/16" filler..Red end..Blah blah blah...While this cools off I think I'll change the oil and filter in my  truck..Why not? what else is there to do.. Now that that's done it's cool enough to deal with..First we put the new journal end back into the chuck and indicate the roller dead nuts...And now we go to the next post.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Moving right along..Now we turn the new steady rest spot on the new journal..So now we flip it end for end...I know now that everything runs true with each other so now everything else is "routine"..Center..turn..finish!!Center..And continue to hit those decimal points...With precision accuracy I might add.. Done journal! Can you spot the welded area???And thats how it's done when the roller has to be "left alone"..Hope someone learned something.. I get all the fun jobs!!! ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
