The first pictures is a combination of a rail I built a month ago and the steel steps and rails I installed yesterday.  The long rail was the first time I rolled Sched 40 pipe in my shopmade ring roller. The second picture is of the bollard I installed to day in progress.  I made the bollard tall so people would not trip over it.The third picture is the completed job.  I had to cut the rail and plumb it.  In the first two pictures it is off.  Not too noticeable in the pictures, but quite noticeable with the existing rail and bollard as references.I also built the rails in the background.  These rails were built to match existing rails. Reply:Nice work, especiall on matching the curve. Are the 90s just fittings or did you bend them also?Latest Toys Miller 180 Mig and Elite Mask!!Wright Welder 225ACShop OutFitters 20/20 Bending SystemHypertherm 380 Plasma30 Years of Sparking (Electrical & Welding)
Reply:That's what I was wondering. Those are some tight bends for a ring roller. I thought it was four 90s and a 45 degree fitting.
Reply:Thank for the commentsYes that is a school.  My alma mater.  Those are 90 degree fittings.I rolled the end of the long rail to follow the side walk.
Reply:I have a question for you tapwelder or anyone else for that matter. When you bolt something down to concrete that will be outdoors exposed to the elements, what kind of hardware do you use? I know you can buy stainless bolts, but do they also sell stainless threaded anchors? Just in case the railing needs to be removed for whatever reason in the future. How do you deal with the rust issue? Oh, nice railing by the way!Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 Stick Linde HDA-300 MillerMatic DVI MIG Miller Dynasty 200DX Hypertherm Powermax 1000
Reply:[QUOTE=Carl26]what kind of hardware do you use? I know you can buy stainless bolts, but do they also sell stainless threaded anchors?/QUOTE]I always used Redhead concrete anchors.  We used them for bracing huge 40' high concrete gang forms and they worked great.  I see no reason why four of the 3/8" or 1/2" ones won't hold a post section of handrail down permanently.  And yes they make them weatherproof.  Usually galvanized, but I am sure they have stainless and aluminum as well.  I have used them for bolting down temporary hand rails as well as brackets to hold 4x4 posts to the ground for arizona room additions on houses.  They work great.
Reply:I too use two to four 3/8" Red Head wedge anchor.  I use 4 bolts on terminal post 2 on intermediate post. I have less trouble with bolts rusting than post rusting that have been cored.  I have never noticed a bolt breaking due to elements.I have repaired a lot of cored rails that have rusted through. In my opinion plates and anchors are stronger and longer lasting than cored post. There is larger foot print adding stability and the post is on a pedestal so water doesn't set at the weld.  If cosmetics is an issue then cover them with shoes.   Repairing rusted posts is a great way to make extra money.Has anybody ever used lead to set post in concrete.  I have been working on a restoration on an old apartment.  The rails were set in 1955.  They poured liquid lead to set the post.  Absolutely no rust--a lot of duct tape though???  I'll post pictures.
Reply:Dear Tapwelder. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize in advance for my son. He is the one who used your nice looking rails as skateboard and bmx bike fodder. If you let me know when, I will send him over to repaint the railings for you!!!! Looks good!!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:It's not my rail.  Hey, I was building one of those rails in the background a few months ago, when a train of about 10 blader and borders came flying down the sidewalk.  A few minutes later the were headed back up the hill with security right behind them.  Beware.
Reply:lead sounds like a good solid fondation to me although i would think gov. regulations would keep you from being able to use it now  days.whats all the duck tape for???? summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
