6G welding in Aussie

Hi guys,Here a Dutchie looking for a 6g welding job in Aussie. Someone told me I have to go to the Pilbra. Does anyone know some company's over there who hire 6g welders?

Reply:Hi Jim,Seems to be quite a bit of work around these days over here. Yes there is lots around the Pilbara region... Mostly Fly in Fly out and usually from Perth, although they may take the right bloke from the east coast. Expect fairly long rosters, 4 weeks on and 1 Week off is the norm. 10-12 hr days. The money is very good. The main projects to go for are, 'Gorgon' & 'Pluto' (Both major Oil and Gas contruction and Pipeline projects) and a few others in and around the towns of Karratha and Port Headland.You do have a few other options tho. Seek website..www.seek.com.au   type in 'welder' 'tig' 'pipe' etc etc and a location and heaps will come upUGL, Mono's and BAE will require you to fill out an online application, which is a slow painful process but worth it once your registered. Some companies won't even respond to your application if you are not in the country.... Speaking of which, you will need to have your trade papers and quals in order for visa's etc.Obviously I know nothing of your background but I worked with an english guy recently who converted his trade to an Australian recognised trade prior to his immigration out here. They required him to go back 15 yrs and provide proof of experience. Long story short, Gov't departments can be a dick around so be prepared!A lot depends on where you want to work. You do get them, but weld only jobs are rare and coveted. Most places will expect you to at least fit your own pipe as well as weld to spec. I am a tig welder only so can't talk for the stick jobs, but it'll help to have both S/S and Carbon exp. If you've got the Inconel's etc even better. A lot of jobs will ask for a Certificate 7, A national standard which is basically 4' pipe, sched 40, tig root/fill/cap.If you have any x-ray results from your welds keep them as they are often used as proof of ability, you will generally have to test to proceedure on site however.I've got mates in most of the major centres in Australia and I don't know of any that are out of work. Jobs come and go, and like everywhere else in the world, if your prepared to be fairly mobile you can get good work.I hope some of this helpscheers, j
Reply:Thanks for the info J. its really helpfullIm planning to go to Australia in okt. Im not applying for a citizenship but for a (sponsor)skilled working visa. Thing is, who's gonna give me a sponsorship while im here in A'dam.  So I'll try to make some contacts with a number of company's before I go. When I find a company who willing to sponsor me I'll go there and do the test. If everything is ok Ill aply for the working visa, witch probably takes 2 months. writing this the whole plan it sounds a little time-consuming. But i think its worth the trouble.  The 'Certificate 7' is that a safety certificate?btw: Im certified in: Stick carbon 6g, Tig stainless en carbon both 6g and MAG filled wire(isnt that flux core) carbon also 6g.I do have the x-rays and bending test reports, so that shouldn't be a problem
Reply:Jim,The cert 7 is a national recognised cert that is a half weld saftey half skill based cert that is available from our tafe/polytech institutes.
