Is there a uv/ir glass/filter that I could add to my helmet for added protection?

Reply:The shaded welding lenses provide all the protection you need.  If your hood is an auto from a major manufacturer (Miller, Jackson, Huntsman, Optrel, Speedglas, etc), it has all the protection you need.  If you want more, wear a pair of UV sunglasses while welding.  I wear shaded safety sunglasses under my hood when working outside in the sun and turn the hood shade down a notch if it's too dark with the sunglasses on.  I don't do it because I want more UV/IR protection, I do it because I dont like taking my safety glasses on and off for each weld but don't want to wear clear safety glasses in the bright sun when not welding, so the shaded ones work well for me.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I purchased the helmet from Northern in 1999 for 189.00. I used it for a while and noticed that my eye burned for a few days after I used it. I checked everything but still got the eye irritation. I read up on ir/uv and finally got a Hobart auto darkening  fixed shade 10 and I have not had a problem with the Hobart. I wanted to see if it was a break down in the ir/uv protection on the Northern helmet by adding a extra lens. I found the receipt when I got It but could not find any specs on the web via the model number. (It's to old.) I run a 220v stick and a Lincoln mig.
Reply:It could be too bright (maybe only darkening to shade 9 or so).It could be letting light in leaks around the lens.It could be allowing more light in the sides (from the back), reflecting back at your face.It could be bad airflow, collecting fumes around your eyes.Irritation can come from a lot of things.

Reply:It is a Morsafe 592 ADF V, I am going to recheck the settings/battery/helmet and give it a test this weekend.
Reply:Normal glass, all varieties, adsorbs UV strongly; to make UV bulbs, fused silica is needed. Many plastics also do, but not all, IIRC. Infrared is a different story, but I don't believe that is likely your problem here. I would suspect the reflected light to be more likely, so long as your hood actually has a glass lens in the path. Does yours have a plastic spatter shield, then glass, then the AD unit followed by another thin protective shield? Seems to me that is standard, and what I have. As Sam likes to say, I could be wrong.

As Sam likes to say, I could be wrong."-------If the glass is the purple element then this is what I have. -- Plastic splatter shield then AD unit then inside plastic shield. The AD unit is a pop out plastic block. also the outside shield has a rubber gasket around it. Thanks to all for the info,
