This is slightly off topic, but yet can still fit in with the project section.I am attempting to repaint some metal patio furniture. I have an El-Cheapo gun that I don't even know where it came from. The canister section is plastic and the gun section is some sort of alloy.  I thinned the paint to what I thought would be the right consistency, and poured it through a cone shaped strainer into the canister.  I was painting along just fine when all  of the sudden, the canister blew off the bottom of the gun.....covering me in paint. After some choice words and a lot of clean-up, I tried it again (believing the first time was a fluke).  Same thing...painted for 5 minutes or so and the canister blew off under pressure again.  I finally just gave up.I never professed to be a painter, or know anything about painting, but here is my question:If I switched to a gravity fed gun, would this continue to happen?  Right now, all I have is a damn mess.
Reply:I have no idea why the assy would explode covering you in paint..Other than it must be defective and is blowing pressurised air into it..But I have to  Brings the 3 Stooges to mind.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:On most guns if ya hold your finger over the nozzle it'll blow back through the cup, which comes in real handy when that little vent stops up.  I don't know how the cup could've blew off though, where did it exactly come apart at?  I don't like the cup guns anymore though, I like gravity or a paint pot.  Paint pot is the way to go if ya want to spend the money.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:There are some types of spray guns, pressure feed, that do pressurize the cup. If I remember correctly they use a lower pressure than siphon feed. I had one that came with a small compressor I once had. They're not as adjustable and don't paint as well as others but on the other hand they use much less air than siphon feen gun.  Clean the gun completely put a little thinner in cup and try 20 psi. Thinner won't be as hard to clean up if the gun screws up. If it sprays thinner OK then you might try some paint.  If you still have problems go get a binks #7 knock off from harbor freight or import tool tent sale. They paint OK for general purpose but will need a larger compressor.
Reply:Hmm, gun blew up with paint all over you, twice no less, and I guess you don't have any instructions that came with it.  Might be a pressure fed gun that needs less pressure, might be a siphon gun with a clogged vent, might just be a garden variety death trap.  I know what I would do with it.  If you switch to ANY other gun that won't happen.  It's really not supposed to. Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.

Reply:You would be shocked on how good the hvlp sprayer from harbor freight works..http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=91772http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=174540
Reply:I use both, syphon and gravity feed, enjoy both. I'm thinking part of your problem is pressure 7-12 psi, 15 tops, should be enough. I'm thinking you might have some issues w/the High Volume Low Pressure gravity gun, I could be wrong. (I have been before) The hvlp has a larger hose, looks a little like a vacumme cleaner hose as well as the hose from your compressor?JMHO,  Bruce The Welding ChefLincoln Weld-Pack 3200 NORWELD StickStanford Hill Farm
Reply:Well, here is a topic that I actually know something about. I make my living as a finisher in a custom cabinet shop and use a wide variety of guns.  I would like to see a picture of the gun you are having trouble with, it would help in diagnosing the problem.  Two years ago I switched to gravity feed guns and have never looked back.  They are easy to use and much easier to clean and have less problems with fluid flow.http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=91009I bought 2 of these from HF about two years ago expecting them to be basically  disposable.  I use them daily for both stains and clear finishes and they perform admirably.  I have a couple of $300 gravity guns and I use these $15 ones more often and save the expensive guns for my dyes and finish touchups.  I bought 2 more in case they stopped carrying them and I didn't know how they would last.  Both of my original ones are still going and I have not even opened the boxes of the others.I have never been a fan of the turbine type guns.  They are more difficult to get set up and are very slow at material transfer.  If you have a 3hp or larger compressor, you will be fine with HF guns.I run mine at about 35-45psi depending on the viscosity of the material. If you want the ultimate in spray rigs, I have two air-assisted airless setups, one with an inline material heater.  Lays the material out at about 90-110 degrees and gives an unbeatable finish.  I use it for pigmented as well as clear topcoats.Sorry for the ramble,  Hope this is some kind of help.Reece
Reply:i think the problem with that siphon gun is the vent hole on the top of the cup is stopped up along with something inside the tip so its building presure and blowing the cup off.unless its an actual presure gun if thats the case the the little valve that relieves the presure is malfuncioning.in my buissiness syphon guns are called dinasaurs, get a gravity and i would sugest getting an hvlp even if you dont paint alot in laemans terms hvlp means more of the paint that is in the gun actually gets on the surface being painted and not on the floor or walls of your shop in the form of overspray a 14 dollar hvlp gun is actually worth about 14 bucks if your planning on using a gun alot i wouldnt go too too cheep.im not saying to go buy a 600 dollar sata like i use at work but you might concider some a little better than hf

Reply:Originally Posted by PookieYeah, that's how I felt too.  I was only using 35# of air at the time.  The gun had a solid thrust of air, even when the trigger was not pulled.Could the tip have stopped up, causing the air to remain in the canister? And the real question:  What does everybody here use to paint with?  A gravity fed or siphon gun?
