Today's project . . . make some grates out of aluminum castings -- covers for a yard drain and window wells. The castings come standard sizes so it's easy enough to cut them up. Attached ImagesFavorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.

Reply:The welds are basically just big deep tacks in the castings. Easy enough to finish though. Attached ImagesFavorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:The window well gets a frame made of aluminum angle with the "lip" inside. Attached ImagesFavorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:The grate gets welded to an aluminum frame with the "lip" outside -- this will make a weather proof seal when plexiglass is mounted under the grate (after painting). Reply:Here's the yard drain. Same basic process. Cut up the castings into the right size pieces and weld them together.I made two of the window well covers and this one yard drain cover. They get painted and the window well covers get plexiglass mounted just under the grate. My aluminum welds still really suck but it makes welding steel seem a lot easier.
