I just got back from a few day stint in houston for my company and am wondering which of you guys on here work for refineries, directly or indirectly or just other fab stuff, because we drove thru texas city, we were working near baytown, and it was refineries as far as I could see and just curious as to where yall work? I should be back down at the end of august to do an install at teh same refinery so if you have any suggestions of what to do when im not at work?
Reply:I used to live in Tx City when I was very little. Still remember some refinery explosions......and the smell. Don't think I'll ever forget that. Best thing for me to do down there when I am not working is get some live shrimp and find a bay....any bay....and fish til the shrimplies are gone.
Reply:I was in pasadena Tx from mothers day till the week after memorial day.Now thats some heat they got down there and wish they would keep it to themselves i stayed in la port.Went to repair a zirconium clad reactor what fun.
Reply:B2N3,zr clad, like explosion welded? yeah and I grew up in St Louis so the heat and humidity didnt bother me until i got into the vessel, that is
Reply:TiFreak Yeah explosion bonded,Thevessel was 15 or 20 FT in dia. and 50 ft long sittin vertical had to go in and repair batten strips after a baffle tore loose while running and the blades on the shaft really beat the inside up pretty good. Oh the humidity bout killed me and my sinuses were killin me as well. Did you happen to notice the air smells a bit different there.
Reply:The air is different there because of all the chemicals you are breathing in from all the petro chem plants. You really don't want to know what it all is.
Reply:I was born and grew up there but I left for good in 1968 after a stint in the Navy and a three years at the Shell Oil Refinery. I never missed the place. Besides the fishing, the seafood is always good in Kemah, and the beaches are good in Galveston. You can tour NASA in Clear Lake but I think they charge admission now. There is an old battleship (Texas) at the San Jacinto battle grounds that you can tour as well a destroyer and WWII submarine at SeaWolf park at Galveston. There is a free ferry from Galveston that crosses the bay to Boliver where you can fish from the jetties. Downtown the Houston zoo has some gorillas and in the same area there are some good museums and a planetarium. And of course you could go to an Astros game in the same general area. When I grew up there the place was dry if you can believe that but there are lots of clubs and beer joints all over the place now. The best source of information would be from the guys at the refinery where you are working.
Reply:B2N3,yeah it was funny because the safety training at the plant was talking about if there was a gas release you would smell hydrogen sulfide but how would you know, it smells like *** out there 24/7 but bonus if you dont shower nobody could really tell and ill probably be headed back down near the end of august to install the new piece so I will get to enjoy that smell again
Reply:If you thought it was hot then...wait until August. You ain't seen nuthin' yet.
Reply:Tifreak what did ya think of the houston safety council did you have to go thru all that? I was playing around in acidic acid, it was clean but still stunk everywhere else. I was at Celanese clearwater plant. The cleanest place ive ever been . I sure hope i dont have to go back in august man its gotta be miserable. I know one thing i ate well while i was down there i gained 14# in 3 weeks.I worked 7-12's wasnt anything to do other than eat sleep and work.
Reply:i dont know about the houston safety council but i had to do a plant specific traning, like at the plant we had to take a safety test and such then we got registered as contractors to work at the plant and that was all and i guess this is standard operating procedure for these plants, this was my first trip btw, at least the plants that my company sells product to and yeah the worst part was the accents, a lot of the guys sounded like that one guy off of king of the hill that you cant understand what he says, you know?
Reply:TiFreak I had to do a company specific also Now thats funny, what you said about the accent I imediately pictured a guy down there i was workin with lol. then there are the ones that cant speak english hardly at all. That was a real adventure. still cracks me up thinkin about that guy down there now, definately king of the hill material.
Reply:I was actually somewhat surprised at the lack of latino workers at the plant, it was all white males, a few women but no minorities which kinda surpised me but this place wasnt the type that you could get away with undocumented workers so that may explain it
Reply:TI i guess thats true i was down there during an emergency shutdown and almost all the company employees were white there were alot of female employees there too. I hardly noticed them , i think there were men there too.
