Ok so this isn't much, but I had the camera out so what the heck.was replacing the oil pressure sender on our jeep the other night - it's in a very tight spot and a total PITA. Was lamenting that I didn't have a real deep socket that I could use, when I realized I could just cut one in half and extend it. Resulting socket made for a pretty trivial job.- John Attached Images
Reply:nice quick tig work
Reply:I think it's really cool between the harbor freight bandsaw and the tig to be able to whip something like this up in a matter of minutes. Showed it with pride and excitement to my wife - somehow she just doesn't seem to understand the glory of such things. Who can understand women  - John
Reply:Hahahaa, a great improvise John, I had a good laugh at the "somehow she just doesn't seem to understand the glory..." John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:How did it hold up welding on that hardened steel on those sockets?
Reply:It seemed perfectly fine, I didn't grind the chrome off before or anything. This wasn't a high-torque application so I didn't really stress it, but it seemed plenty strong.- John
Reply:I like it- a quick easy fix. I have thought about sleeving together some sockets that I have needed in the past for super deep applications. Now, next time I need one, I am going to do it. It seems so simple a fix.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:now you need to modify a socket for stupid oxygen sensors because of the wire hanging out
Reply:You should see the special tools the manufacturers of multi-million dollar engines provide us with.  They all look about like that, some are kind of cheesy.
Reply:Hey Kingrat they actually make one, I have one. It just looks like a deep socket, maybe alittle longer, but with a half inch slit down one side almost all the way up.  Its one of those black powder coated impact looking sockets.
Reply:Nice John! Field modifications LOL! Got at least one job i can use that idea with right now. Thinking outside the box Latest Toys Miller 180 Mig and Elite Mask!!Wright Welder 225ACShop OutFitters 20/20 Bending SystemHypertherm 380 Plasma30 Years of Sparking (Electrical & Welding)

Reply:Nice work, I have extended some sockets quite a bit for varying things.  They can come in quite handy at times.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Very nice..Really is a good feeling when you know you can do whatever it takes.. Improv is a way of life where I work..Now you need a replacement for the set.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Nice weld job there. It's always a shame to chop up or modify a tool, but sometimes you just have to do whatever it takes to get the job done.  I have a drawer full of these type things.  Off-set box ends, lengthened, shortened & slotted sockets, long drills, etc.  I usually look to my junk toolbox to butcher up something if  possible, or take a trip to the Taiwan tool store.  I had to cut up a Snap On once in a pinch and that hurt.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:That is a nice wrench. To get out an o2 sensor, I just knock off the top and put a 6 point socket or box end wrench on em.  I usually end up heating the boss it sits in red.   This can also gall the threads in the pipe.  After taking a bunch out, I realized you don't put them in too tight.  You can buy just the boss or what ever you call it from Napa.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:It is the best feeling in the world knowing that you can make your own tools, and do anything.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Nice. I like the "visitorque" open design!
Reply:We bent a lot of perfectly good combo wrenches to do the rebuild on an old Hamilton diesel.  The access doors in the sides were high compared to the main bearing bolts so we had to bend the wrench so it would fit through the access door.
Reply:I probably have twice as many 'modified' tools of factory condition. Swap meets are great for the stock. Bucket of assorted sockets, rusty? $5. Compb wrenches? $0.50 to $1.
Reply:I am going to get a picture of the tool that we use at work. Pentawelder will attest to this: We use 5 sided bolts for security on our buried handholes and manholes. The tool to use is actually a snap-on brand socket, but instead of just giving us the socket, management had some guys weld handles onto the sockets. Ugh...wait till you see the job. Uglier than sin. Pictures coming today or tomorrow. What a great way to ruin a SnapOn socket.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
