Ya know those "custom" wheels that use rubber bands for tires?? The ones that look like this??Seems the wheel met a curbing along the way..Oh well what to do... After taking the die grinder to it to clean up the mess we were ready to proceed..The wheel is powder coated but it almost looks like aluminum so lets see what it looks like when its done..I only removed about 1/8" of the coating near the weld area..And by the way this repair is only cosmetic...It has nothing to do with the tire bead area..Ok after a "few" passes here is the inside built up..Heres the outer edge..Now on to the machining..Next post.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:There were a few top scrapes i filled in also..Torch..100 amps..Gas mix..(38%)1/16 5356 filler..Well my lathe is busy so we'll bring it down front and have Mike do the machining..Setting up..(It was only running .003 out so we can live with that...)And this is the result...One more..I get 1/2 of all the fun jobs...  ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:How much does a new wheel cost?
Reply:Great job Zap. Mac - it depends on the wheel. Those look like the GM Firebrid, T/A wheel...but I could be wrong. New from GM, they are quite costly - about 250 or so.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:The owner said "These Are No Longer Made And They were 250$ Each"..Beats me if they are or not..... They go on a Mustang Cobra.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I'ld call that a fix.  Well done!!City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:Nicely done.I like seeing this type of work as it sticks in my mind as far as what can be done.  I'd never work on a rim, but that's where my experience level is (not a lot). You do get all the fun jobs. Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:Darn it...COBRA, Cobra...I knew it looked familiar. Ah well, I'm getting old. To quote Wello, " my rememberer is broken and my forgetter barely works."  At least that's how I think it goes, without looking it up.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Yes, very nice!  Would it be appropriate to ask how much the repair cost him?

Reply:That dude got a sweet deal!  He owes you!
Reply:The longest process in the whole deal was setting it up in the lathe..I just did the welding..25 min.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Man, you can fix anything Zap! I enjoy reading your repair threads. Sorry for the dumb questions, but: What type of material was the wheel made of? How can you tell? What is 5356 filler?Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 Stick Linde HDA-300 MillerMatic DVI MIG Miller Dynasty 200DX Hypertherm Powermax 1000
Reply:I didn't try to see if it was forged or cast, but it was definitely aluminum, of which 5356 is a common alloy in aluminum filler rods.
Reply:Youch, is there anything you can't fix?  Now I gotta know.  You've gone "one step beyond" (insert echo here) so is there anything that can't be fixed?I wish I had that touch.  I've been working on it but I have to admit, I just don't have it.  Really frustrates me.
