Hi all, I have been searching the web up and down for a simple explanation to this rather stupid question, and for the life of me, can't seem to find the answer. On a welding helmet, what are the differences between a "safety plate" and a "cover plate"?I see that many online sellers sell "cover plates" that they say not to use as a "safety plate".  Others offer "inside" and "outside" plates. But nowhere is there a write-up on the differences of these clear lenses. What I need to know is what does each do (it's specs/intended purposes) and can one be used in place of the other (like using a safety plate inside and out). Thanks!!
Reply:I think that a safety plate would be plastic and be used on the inside closest to your eyes so it can't shatter and do damage. A cover plate is glass and is used to cover the dark lens to prevent damage to it. In my experience a safety plate marks up fast and goes cloudy whereas a glass cover plate stays easier to see thru......Mike
Reply:I've seen a lot of "cover plates" that are polycarbonate, just like the "safety plates", that's where my confusion is coming from.
Reply:In fact, now that I'm specifically looking for "glass cover plates", I'm finding that 99% of online sellers don't carry them (in 4.5" x 5.25"). They only carry polycarbonate.Where are you guys finding/buying them (the glass ones)?
Reply:Cover and safety seem to be used interchangeably.   I call them by both names but mean the same thing when I say it.   I haven't seen glass clear lenses for sale at the welding shop in years.  They stock polycarbonates in both standard sizes (2x4 and 4x5, nominal).MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I've been in a welding class for the past 8 months now. When I did Flux Core overhead V groove (3/8 plate), I melted part of a poly clear lens. So I'm interested in getting at least 1 or two glass ones, especially for overhead.I've also noticed that the poly ones cloud easily, and I only get to clean them once before they're trash. I'm guessing the glass would be better.

Reply:Clean it with Windex and a soft paper towel and it won't cloud up as fast.  Wiping them off with your welding glove or dirty shirt scratches them up right away.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I found glass ones here for $2.50 per...http://www.toughweld.com/products/24...r-cover-plates Originally Posted by daddyLearn how to keep your head at an angle so slag does not land on your lens and burn it.
