Just wondering a little...I really want to work in America as soon as I'm a tradesman which will be in the next 18 months or so. How easy will it be for me to get a good job over there and what is the demand for welders like especially off shore or in ship building?I've read in places there is a shortage of good welders and that the money is bang on, is this true? Thanksin advance...Metaltrades.co.uk
Reply:How about Canada?I worked in the shipyards of British Columbia for many years and LOVED it!The money is good (around $30/hr) with benefits, etc.Plus it's some of the most beautiful scenery in the world  and (most of) the people in BC are more laid back and friendly than in Onterrible Talent is a flame. Genius is a fire.- Bern Williams
Reply:The first thing you need to find out about is what the legal requirements for you are. I used to work with quite a few guys from overseas but don't know what all they had to go through to be able to. All of that is controlled by the federal government here, and sometimes differs based on your country of origin..The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/usc...0045f3d6a1RCRDI think you need to go here to check out the requirements.  With the current exchange rates, you'ld be better off, however, working in Scotland or Canada and vacationing here.  The Pound is getting upwards of $2 right now.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:if you or someone else finds work let me know, i cant find anything worth working at here in Michigan
Reply:This isn't a good time, The building trades here are running almost 40% unemployment. usually you can count an average of 20 tower cranes in the city, now theres one. Residential construction is nonexistant, no one is going to buy new construction when there are so many foreclosures on the market. Hospitals are the only ones building but thats not enough work for everyone. I was a production welder before I got into the trades  and I have been welding over 30 years now, If you do a job search for a welder with a 40 mile radius 2 or 3 jobs come up and they pay $ 15,000 a year, thats below poverty level with the cost of living here. I bought some steel at a steel warehouse that does some fabrication and I was going to ask them about a job, but I couldn't find anyone there who could speak english. This isn't a good time.
