Okay my machine is a Millermatic 185 I have been welding on some 3/16 plate for some air ride parts. The machine has been doing real good but recently its been make small boobies at the end of weld like http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7958758_n.jpgkinda hard to see on this one, but its there to.http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7420424_n.jpgThe machine wasn't doing it before, what could be some problems to look for?Adam MMorales Ranch
Reply:Its a contamination problem, most likely its from the heavy scale on the bottom piece but it could also be from lack of (or contaminated) shielding gas.  However, if it was a gas problem you would be more likely to see porosity than the "boobie."It could also be from moisture, ie; coolant or cutting fluid.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:I think its might be a lack of shielding gas b/c the first part of the bead is good but the end is where the boobies start popping up. I am thinking b/c its an older machine that with the gun nozzles are getting clogged or the gas valve is stickingAdam MMorales Ranch
Reply:It is just something in the base metal, and only shows up at the end, for whatever reason.  I think it might be contamination that is being drug along in the puddle, then finally rears it's head when you reach the end.  Also, try holding the torch over the end of the weld for a second.  Even though there is no post flow, usually there is enough shielding gas in the vicinity to hold until the metal is cooled enough.  Pulling the torch away too quickly has yielded that problem for me, in the past.  Either way, it is annoying to finish a purdy weld then have that pop up after the torch has been pulled away.  Have the contamination be bad enough, and the tip will open up, and it will spit out a shower of glowing crud (certainly not molten steel), then be hollow.Who is John Galt?
Reply:i believe the proper term for this is not weld booby but rather a "snotlike crust"...
Reply:it's pretty obvious either not enough shielding gas should be at 30 on your guage OR maybe your liner needs to be changed as gas may not be getting through!!!
Reply:I guess I should restate what I said.  If its from lack of shielding gas it should show more open surface porosity.  Since its bubbling outwards there is something inside the weld that is out-gassing from the heat of the weld.  Most likely it is some kind of moisture, but could also be from grease/paint or rust. From the color of the tacks, and the lack of porosity I doubt gas flow is an issue.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:Aw Samm.... I figured you'd have one of your usual great picts to go with this topic! .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
