Reply:If its blue loc-tite you just need a cheater bar. If its red loc-tite you need a torch.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:I use red loc tite nore than anything and you will need a nice breaker bar to get the bolt or nut off again either that or a propane torch, I wouldnt use o/a
Reply:Pretty unlikely that it has loctite unless the owner really pissed off the tire guy. Most locks are just that tight and very difficult to remove without the key. A little heat wont hurt either way. If you have an air chisel you can warm it up and try to coax it to tun by hooking an edge with the air chisel and turning it in the direction of loosening. If it does have loctite, consider whether you want to get messed up in the conflict between the owner and the loctiter. If it has been loctited, there is some explanation you probably dont want to get involved in.I'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys? Trade?
Reply:Another tip if its just tight is to soak a rag in water and wrap it around the lug if you can and let it sit for a bit, then if you have GOOD balance stand on the breaker bar and git er dun type thing... And remember to ALWAYS loosen the lugs while the car is NOT on a jack for safety reasons...
Reply:I undo Red Loctite'ed fasteners all the time without torch assistance, since Loctite prevents seizing.Stuck lugs are often overtorqued, and wheel locks often don't have as much socket contact as a conventional lug.I second the air chisel method, but a regular (sharp!) chisel works too.I weld scrap rod or rebar handles to all my conventional chisels for (MUCH) better control in tight areas and to avoid smashed fingers. They are fine for lug removal in salvage yard work. I've done plenty. Extend chisels as necessary if you want to move away from the wheel when striking.

Reply:Tell him to either take it somewhere else or....Just throw the gun on it and break the studs off.I used to run a shop here in Al and we broke them off frequently. We'd get people in from Sam's and Walmart etc. that couldn't believe a tire monkey would over-tighten it enough to prevent a wheel from coming off. Over tightening a bolt and nut isn't too uncommon with the tire monkeys that are out there. What's even better is customers who get stuck on the road and cannot get the lugs off. I wouldn't suggest heating it as you might ruin the finish of the wheel? Sometimes it's expensive to be dumb, and the owner putting loctite on wheel studs appears to be one of these moments.I vote bust the studs and get money to replace them.Last edited by jsm11; 07-06-2010 at 03:28 PM.1981 Lincoln SA 200Miller Trailblazer 302gMiller 211 Mig Welder w/ AutosetI'm learning to stick metal together

Reply:You really shouldn't listen to me I'm sorta the forum idiot/jerkIn a bind, it's gotta come off?.............................. Cut the dam thing off with a torch, and press in a new studThe time we've been talkin' about it, it could have been done, and back on the roadAnd you won't blow yourself to Kingdom Come, applying heat to the center of the wheel isn't like welding on the actual rimWear a full face shield, stuffs gonna be blowing everywhere"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:In all my years changing tires on heavy equipment and trucks, I've never had one we couldn't get off with a breakerbar and good sized pipe. Mind you we sheared off a couple of studs, but we still got the wheel off.I'd suggest a good name brand 1/2" breaker bar. I've got an 18" and 24" Craftman breaker bar. (not sure if they still sell both sizes or not.) That plus a 3' length of 1" dia pipe gets most things loose. If not theres the 3/4" breaker bar and the 6' pipe to go to. Ratchets you usually just strip the pawls in the ratchet. That will break loose even things our good 1/2" impact can't. BTW not all impacts are equal. If you want to bust loose stuck and rusted nuts, do a bit of research and spend the money on a good one. The Dayton we have has more torque than many 3/4" guns, but it wasn't cheap..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Good deal MoneyMaker.By the way, the task seen in post #13 was to remove keyed security lock nuts, which had a glass-hard tamper resistant outer ring. Any attempt to grab or chisel the ring either slipped or simply chipped away at the ring. The car was a junker; object was to save the wheels.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 07-07-2010 at 01:04 AM.

Reply:Heck Snap on sells a lock bolt splitter. Just weld a nut to it and spin the thing off. By the time you finish welding, that lock tight is going to be all loosened up. Its off.
Reply:Make sure to use some anti-splatter on your rims. |
