Reply:Have you tried it to see that it indeed works?? If so, for 300-450 it's a good deal. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:I don't recognise it from those picts so I can't tell you much about it's capabilities. I'd have to agree that if it works $300-450 would seem to be a decent deal. The only question I have is if it will do what you want. If it's a DC only machine and you want to learn to tig alum, then it may not be the deal you are looking for. To answer that, we'd need more info on the make and model of the machine as well as just what you are looking to eventually do.Oh, also remember you will need a cylinder of 100% argon to tig. I don't see one in the picts, so figure almost another $200 or so to get a meduim sized cyl if ones not included..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I have no experience with chicago electric. I can see what looks to be the ac/dc lever on the left side of the first pic. That also looks very small next to that tire so if it is a transformer based machine it may be a very low output. Did the seller post a picture of the NEMA rating tag on the back of the machine? If not, you need to know the rated output and duty cycle. It may not be such a good deal if it's 120amps at 10% duty or something like that.Matt

Reply:Dont go down that path........no way was it 1200 new....and I think the money would be better spent on other things as it wont give you any more capability than your torch.

Reply:I'd pass. I thought it might be an old Airco that was a rebadged Miller. Something sounds fishy to me if thats honestly what he paid originally. There may be some issue he's aware of that he's not disclosing. If there's a problem, the chances of getting it fixed are slim at best.If you hunt around you can probably find a nice older industrial AC/DC tig for $500 and up. I've seen Miller 330A/BP's in that range. Big heavy machines that require a lot of power but weld really nice. Also for just over $1K I've seen some sweet "newer" used Syncrowave 180's/ 200's in good shape.Save your cash and keep looking. Reply:The AC makes it interesting. And it has a heck of a lot more power and duty cycle than say, a Miller Econotig.I would check that it has a high frequency arc stabilizer built in before buying though. I hear that is a necessary feature of a transformer TIG welder to maintain the AC arc (especially with low welding current). |
