got a new weldor on site, and i see right away hes welding 6010  downhand. he brushed the root and i thought it was 7018. "hot and fast" he said witha smile. 1/8 5p+, 110 amps. beautiful even inside. then a hot pass same way, a little oscillation to widen out. then he caps with 7018, nice weave. next one he starts the same but does the cap with 7010. he said thats how they do it onpipelines, primary reason is its okay in wet weather.  he passed the test when i asked how to do 7018 downhill. no smile, just a " dont do it".
Reply:Good old hipy rod, will leave a nice cap HYP7010 ( HIPY)
Reply:I dont know exactly what it was you were trying to say, but it seems like he tried to show you the difference between a 7018 uphill and a 7010 downhill?Pretty standard on pipelines, reason they go downhill is for the smaller HAZ which is important with the alloy content of the pipe they use.  Uphill is too slow and puts in way to much heat/filler material causing more shrinkage/dilution.What were you testing him for that he just welded whatever way he wanted too?  It shouldn't of came as any surprise if he was following the WPS.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:i had not seen 6010 run downhand before. i have never seen  anyone 6010 run as smooth and uniform as this was. sorry no pics, max security prison. with the quality of the "engineering" that goes into the projects  here, im lucky if the drawings indicate anything relative to welding..sometimes  just a single note, " use xx18 electrode."...so as superintendent my job is make sure the weldors that arrive here, and ive seen some humdamdingers, can do a decent job..some i can throw out right away based on the glob they leave behind...hence everyone gets some form of a test...the certifications that do get sent in are typically  from joes welding school, saying that freddy is a good welder....we  don need no stinkin wps...and if we tell our customer that his engineers suck he replies "thats why i have you"........
Reply:Downhill cellulose procedures are possibly more common than low hydrogen electrodes, at least from my experience.  Because 6010 has so little flux and depends on the massive amounts of carbon dioxide gas for shielding, you have little potential for problems with lack of fusion or slag inclusions.  Certainly root passes are risky when using E 7018 because shielding is provided by the flux and a small amount of carbon dioxide produced.  BTW make sure you use "downhill" rather than "downhand"  It can create confusion although we do know what you mean in this case.
Reply:lotechman, i guess I dont know the diff..i meant he was starting at top(12 oclck) and running toward the bottom..downhill...what is downhand??
Reply:i did a little digging..downhand is flat, downhill is vertical starting at the top....yes?
Reply:Downhand is the same as saying vert. down to some people.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:It's a fine point of terminology but then you can get carried away.  Downhand is welding done in the flat position.   Also  "welding machine" no longer exists. My previous employer had an argument with the government tax assessor.  The technical term now is "power source" as described on the invoice. It goes on and on.
