One of the rubber core rollers I made last week came back this A.M. ...The tolerances on the print for the journal finish was 2.6875 +.0000 -.003The drive side journal I finished -.003...The customer said.."Well I'd rather have that side -.001 instead".. My boss said "Fine..But its not going back on the floor as "rework" its going out as "extra work".."No problem" was the reply..Now its sleeve time..We have some finished I.D. DOM tubing with a 2.375 I.D. ... Perfect! Here's the roller after I turned the journal 2.380..Area in question..Be sure to leave a small champher for welding...Small champher in the tube to match..And here's the champher for the rear...And now it's time for another post..BRB.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:So here is the sleeve itself..I think thats hot enough..Sleeve installed..Weld area front..Front area welded..Next post......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Wow! There is just something about precision work that any man has to envy. You got it that hot with just a torch? BTW.. would you care to post a pic or two of this massive lathe you use? I'm always at awe at the sizes of pieces you are turning.Last edited by yellow; 07-24-2007 at 04:11 PM.

Reply:You get all the fun jobs. You make it look too easy.Must have been a fussy customer. What did the customer pay per .001?Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.

Reply:Zap,Did you happen to catch the show on aircraft carriers the other day where the machinist was talking turning a propeller shaft? He stated that the lathe could handle a piece 67' long, weighing up to 65 tons. That has to be a monster.Building a Jeep from the ground up as a graduation present for my kid. Reply:I just finished a three year stint at Electric Boat in Groton, CT on a new construction submarine. They have alot of nice toys there...But the real amazing machinery is at their Quonsit Point, RI facility. After walking through a procession of machine shops with gradually increasing sized milling machine and lathes, you walk into the real big machine shop. There they have 3d welding machines that will bend, shape, weld, pickup, rotate and translate cylinders up to 50' in diameter and 30' long. The "machine shop" is an old WWII aircraft hanger that covers about 1/4 acre with a 300' tall ceiling. I think it has it's own weather indoors. They have tubing benders there to bend 10-14" mild steel piping into complex 3d shapes with mm precision. Pretty cool place.
