I gave a shot at the Contraption that mwccwi  Posted a link to:http://www.millerwelds.com/interests...bending-brake/I haven't got around to actually using it yetBut It is pretty slick (or should I say Awsome hahaha)Here's some pics: Attached Images
Reply:I recently purchased a small 18" brake from HF very similar to the Miller one.  I got it home and had to (as usual) do some modifications to make it easier to use.  Instead of C-Clamping the hold down bar, I drilled the table & clamping bar for 1/4X20 bolts with quick hold downs at various points across the bed (5), which can moved according to the width of material I'm bending.  I also made a bracket to hold a degree wheel for quick reference and repeatability.  It is supposed to be good up to 16G, but my modifications make it dependable for 1/8" narrow flat stock that I'm working with.Just finishing it up this weekend so I'll take some pics and post them.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:Neat job WDB!But I think the correct link to the Miller project page for the bender is http://millerwelds.com/interests/pro...bending-brake/
Reply:Thanks can't wait to try it out.But I don't like the clamping Idea either.Look at the Bender-1.JPGSee that peice of double 3/16" plate thats welded together in back of the hinge.I'm going to weld a peice of 1" square 11 gauge tubing on top of it.But First I'm planning on drilling holes 6" apart all along the tube and all the way through. Then weld a 5/8" nut to the to the top of each holeSo that a 5/8" bolt can screw down and clamp the work peice to be bent, between the  bender base and a Peice of steele. If it doesn't work I can always cut it off.Last edited by WhiskeyDeltaBravo; 07-27-2007 at 05:30 PM.
Reply:Why not try some of these toggle clamps to hold it down instead..http://www1.mscdirect.com/ProductImages/0393369-11.jpgEasy to use and strong as he!!There are many styles......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:El NeatoIf my FrankenTube design fails to meet my unknown specs.I'll be looking into those for shure.;-)

Reply:Looks really good there WDB.  I see that you've installed the hold down bolts.  I mentioned earlier in the post that I too had been playing with a little 18" HF bender.  I finished it today and took a few pics to show you a couple of other ideas you may want to consider on your bender.1) I added a degree wheel so I don't have to remove the piece to verify my intended angle.  I plan on making angles from 30* to 120* for a project I'm setting up for.  This little bender has a maximum of 1/8 narrow stock, but can do 18" up to 16 gauge.2) I drilled and tapped the bed for 5 hold down points that can be moved as required to get the best clamp action on what I'm working with.  I had some nice lever screws that have spring-loaded adjustable levers to move them out of the way.3) I put some bar "lift" springs to hold the bar up when tension is released to make set up quicker and easier.4) I also scribed some 90* lines across the bed at several locations to aid in squaring up stock. Reply:Nice Job!The angle wheel is a cool idea. The best part about is That it works :-)I have decided to add an extra brace under minebefore I try it. Since they didn't have the thick Angle iron that I wanted.Where did you get the round knobs?WDB
Reply:Looks great guys,  The angle indicator is a real nice touch Rick.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Thnkas guys.  The adjustable knobs are available through McMaster-Carr products.  They are not cheap, I had some old ones around that I had used on an old woodworking jig another project years ago.  They come in a variety of sizes.I got the adhesive degree wheel through McC (they have all of the cool small stuff you can't find anywhere else) and they have larger sizes available.I will probably put some stiffening braces on mine too.  I can see where it could benefit from some renforcement and I like the angle as an easy fix.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
