Can someone please explain why backing tape is used sometimes?
Reply:We use backing tape instead of backing gas when ever possible. That saves us the time and hassle ofplugging or damning the pipe, valve, tank or what ever else we are welding. If you use tape when the fit-up is a butt weld joint on stainless steel you generally don't need backing gas.http://www.aquasolwelding.com/products/fiback
Reply:In the shipyards around here they use ceramic backing tape alot. I presume they do it for cost efficiency, as it is easier/quicker/cheaper to apply and remove than welding on a backing bar and cutting it off after. Probly cheaper to buy the tape than the steel too, though that I don't know cause I've never bought the tape.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op |
